Drowsy Drivers Can Lead to a Pennsylvania Car Accident

A Pennsylvania car accident can happen at anytime leaving you or a loved one with a serious injury. There is a wide range of factors that can lead to a car accident injury, including drowsy driving.

AAA Foundation report

In 2010, the AAA Foundation released a report, entitled Asleep at the Wheel: The Prevalence and Impact of Drowsy Driving. The results were shocking. According to the findings:

  • One in six (16.5 %) of fatal crashes nationwide involved a drowsy driver
  • One in eight (13.1%) of crashes where someone was sent to the hospital involved a drowsy driver
  • Drivers ages 16 to 24 were almost twice as likely to be involved in a crash involving a drowsy driver

Dangers of driving drowsy

Driving while fatigued can have catastrophic effects on your ability to operate a vehicle. Driving drowsy can impair your vision, judgment, and ability to react to dangers on the road. The AAA Foundation's report cites that approximately 57 percent of car accidents involving a drowsy driver involved the tired driver drifting into other lanes and/or off the road.

Staying awake at the wheel

You owe it to yourself and your family to drive safely. This includes staying alert and awake while at the wheel. Make sure:

  • That you get plenty of sleep, especially the night before a long road trip
  • Pull over immediately if you become sleepy or fatigued
  • Schedule frequent stops. A break every two hours or every 100 miles could be the difference between life and death
  • Travel with someone that is awake. An awake passenger can talk with you and help you remain alert
  • Drink caffeinated beverages, such as coffee

The driving habits of other drivers

You can't always control the driving behaviors of the person you are traveling with or the other people you share the roadways with. A car accident can leave you or a loved one with a serious Louisiana car accident injury. You could be left with a mountain of medical bills and unable to earn a living. An experienced Louisiana car accident attorney can help you hold the other driver liable for your damages.
