Safe Driving During Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Holiday Car Accidents

Motorists hit the roads this weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday. Others will extend the holiday and return home in early December. PennDOT and statewide police agencies are ready for the increase in traffic on PA's interstates, highways, and roadways as they partner to decrease the number of PA auto accidents and help ensure the safety of all:

  • Beginning November 19 PennDOT's "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement program is in full effect (until December 3).
  • PA State Police and municipal police departments will be on the lookout for erratic motorist behaviors - speeding, aggressive driving, impaired driving, and distracted driving - with the use of:
  • 1. sobriety checkpoints;
  • 2. roving patrols; and
  • 3. normal traffic safety

PennDOT makes recommendations to drivers

  • Obey speed limits.
  • Avoid distractions behind the wheel.
  • Be well-rested and alert, taking frequent breaks or alternating drivers on long trips.
  • Plan on encountering traffic tie-ups and allow extra time for travel, especially during the core Thanksgiving travel days - the day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday following Thanksgiving.
  • Always wear a seatbelt.

More car accidents occur at the Thanksgiving holiday than any other holiday
