Leading Causes of Summertime Auto Accidents in the Philadelphia Area

Many drivers in the Philadelphia area look forward to the summer months for the warm weather, vacations, and relaxation. Unfortunately, the dangers on area roads may cause more stress than relaxation during the summer. Studies have shown that accidents do increase during the months of June, July and August, and there are several factors present on Bucks County roads which contribute to the increase in auto accidents and the increased risk of personal injuries.

There are several reasons why auto accidents increase nationally during the summer, but the following are local factors which are present on Bucks County roads.

• Summer Holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are increasingly celebrated by getting drunk. Statistics show that not only do auto accidents involving sober drivers increase during these holiday periods, but DUI accidents increase as well. It is advised that you do not get behind the wheel after drinking at a summer holiday party. • School is Out: As much as they do not want to admit it, Philadelphia area teenagers are inexperienced with driving. But when school is out for the summer, teens have more opportunities to drive each day and stay out later each night. Teenagers tend to feel invincible behind the wheel, which can lead to dangerous and risky behaviors, like texting while driving or speeding. These habits often result in increased Bucks County auto accidents involving teens during the summer.

• Traffic: Traffic is increased on area roads not only because of the reasons mentioned above, but also because many Bucks County residents head out for summer vacations. Increasing numbers of tourists, everyday travelers, teenagers and holiday partiers mean more volume on Philadelphia area roads, which can lead to frustration, road rage, and accidents which result in unnecessary personal injuries.

• Animals are Multiplying: Those who are not familiar with animals local to Bucks County may not know to watch out for them especially around dusk and dawn. Many of our local animals were born during the spring, and now the animals are full-grown and spreading around Bucks County. Deer, raccoons, and opossums are commonly seen on area roads, and large deer are often responsible for auto accidents and personal injuries.
