Spinal Fusion Surgery: A possible treatment for your car accident pain

Back injuries sustained in Bucks County auto accidents can range from minor to severe and are most often somewhere in between, observes experienced Bucks County personal injury lawyer, Michael L. Saile, Jr. Your vertebrae, the bones that make up your spine, can be easily thrown out of alignment or even damaged due to an auto accident. When pain from these spinal injuries is intense and long-lasting, your doctor may recommend spinal fusion surgery to help relieve your pain.

Car Accident Injuries to the Spine

Spinal injuries commonly sustained in Bucks County auto accidents include herniated discs, bulging discs, and fractures of the vertebrae. Disc injuries involve damage to the spongy discs which lie in between each of your vertebra. When these discs are damaged, they may come in contact with a nerve and cause severe pain. This is what is called a pinched nerve. Your vertebrae can be fractured just as the other bones in your body can be fractured in a Philadelphia auto accident. Pain can result from a fractured vertebra and there may be no other option than spinal fusion surgery to relieve that pain.

Potential Treatment for Injured Vertebrea

Spinal fusion surgery is most often done in a hospital by a spinal surgeon. The procedure involves a bone graft which is placed in between two vertebrae, causing the two vertebrae to fuse together. This will reduce movement of the injured vertebrae so that pain will hopefully be lessened. Though there will be less movement of the injured vertebra, spinal fusion surgery should not result in a reduction in your range of motion. If your back pain continues after the procedure, this may be a sign of a clinical failure. This means that the fusion was successful but your pain has not receded.

Assess the Risks

As with all surgeries, there can be complications associated with spinal fusion surgery. Some of these complications include infection, blood clots, and excessive bleeding. Pseudoarthrosis is another complication, which means that there was not enough bone growth for the vertebrae to fuse together. A second surgery will most likely be recommended if pseudoarthrosis occurs. Surgery is serious; it is important to consider all of your options for injury treatment following a Bucks County auto accident.
