It's probably something that has happened to you - you're out for a walk and go to cross the street only to find that you have to dodge a vehicle that is moving too fast or one that doesn't stop for you even in a crosswalk.
Pedestrian safety is a serious issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were nearly 4,400 pedestrians killed in 2008 and another 69,000 were injured in the U.S. On average, there is one crash-related pedestrian death every two hours and a pedestrian injury every eight minutes.
The CDC indicates that the oldest and the youngest in our population are at greatest risk for pedestrian accidents and that alcohol often plays a major role:
Older adults
Pedestrians over the age of 65 accounted for 18% of all pedestrian deaths and an estimated 10% of all pedestrians injured in 2008.
Children
In 2008, one in every five children between the ages of 5 and 9 who were killed in
traffic accidents was a pedestrian.
Drivers and pedestrians who are alcohol-impaired
Alcohol impairment - either for the driver or for the pedestrian - was reported in
48% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian death.
When driving through our Bucks County and New Jersey neighborhoods remember that with the earlier onset of darkness, it may be more difficult to spot a walker or a jogger, so go slowly. Pedestrians, be aware that drivers cannot always see you. Proceed cautiously and walk facing traffic, wear bright colored clothing or reflectors when out walking, and use a sidewalk whenever possible. This time of year, as we walk through mall parking lots doing our holiday shopping, we are reminded of just how inattentive drivers and pedestrians alike can be. New Jersey drivers are reminded that they now must stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, and not merely yield. It's a busy season and we all have a lot on our minds, but as both a driver and a pedestrian, remain alert for your safety and that of others.
If you know someone who has been injured or tragically killed in a Philadelphia pedestrian accident, continue to read this website and our other Pennsylvania and New Jersey pedestrian injury website to gain as much information as possible. When you are ready to set up a free information gaining consultation, fill out our contact us form and we will promptly set up your free meeting.
