New Year’s Eve notorious for Philadelphia auto accidents

If you’ve ever been involved in an auto accident on a holiday, you know how depressing and disheartening it can be. New Year’s Eve, a night when many people celebrate the beginning of a new and exciting year, is one of the most dangerous nights to drive in the Philadelphia area. Several adverse conditions combine on the last day of the year to make New Year’s Eve more dangerous than some other holidays throughout the year. The following are some of the reasons why you should take caution when traveling for New Year’s festivities:

Increased Traffic: It is very common in the Philadelphia area for residents to head out to a New Year’s Eve party. Whether it is at a bar, restaurant, or a friend’s home, many people will be on the roads at the same time as you to reach your destination. Increased volume on Bucks County roads can lead to dangerous auto accidents and unnecessary personal injuries.

Late Night Celebrating: Most New Year’s Eve celebrations are scheduled for the evening until midnight. This means that the majority of people will be driving in the dark, which puts you at a greater risk for an auto accident. If it has snowed or rained earlier in the day, by midnight, Bucks County roads may be icy as well.

Drunk Driving: Most end of the year parties involve some type of alcoholic beverage, like champagne at midnight, but many others revolve around the consumption of alcohol. Drunk drivers heading home from parties late at night account for many of the auto accidents on New Year’s Eve in the Philadelphia area. If you are having a party, make sure none of your guests plan to drive while intoxicated. If you plan to drink at a New Year’s party, make sure to designate a driver at the beginning of the night, or call a cab at the end.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), 2,070 Pennsylvania auto accidents occurred on or immediately after New Year’s in 2010, accounting for 17 of the year’s auto accident deaths. These accidents were no doubt affected by the factors listed above.
