Get your car accident neck injury properly diagnosed!

Nearly everyone who is involved in a Bucks County car accident or Mercer County truck accident experiences neck pain following the accident. Upon impact, your head and neck naturally get thrust back and forth but with force that is unnatural to the way we move in our daily lives. When this happens, any of the following neck-related car accident injuries are possible:

- Neck Sprain (commonly referred to as whiplash)
- Cervical Radiculopathy
- Cervical Disc Herniation

Neck Sprain/Whiplash

Clinically referred to as cervical sprain or cervical strain, this is a soft tissue neck injury in which the muscles in the neck become stretched or torn. You will likely feel stiffness and discomfort in your neck, possibly accompanied by headaches, but the good news is that a neck strain, or whiplash, is a condition that will completely diminish in time. Your doctor may recommend wearing a soft neck collar or neck brace for a couple of weeks. Whiplash/neck sprains are commonly a result of rear-end accidents.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy, sometimes called a pinched nerve, is caused by damage to the root of a spinal nerve. The cervical portion of your spine consists of the portion below the skull, which connects to the upper back (thoracic spine). In other words, it's the neck - and it is the most freely moving part of the spine. Because cervical radiculopathy is brought on by injury to a nerve, you will likely experience pain down into your shoulders or your arms. The pain can be sharp or similar to the sensation of pins and needles. Rather than pain, however, you may experience complete numbness and/or an overall feeling of weakness in your arm(s).

Cervical Disc Herniation

The discs in our spine contain a gel that allows the discs to act as a cushion to the vertebrae (bones) that make up the spine. Spinal discs help keep the spine flexible. A herniated disc is the result of an injury to the spine in which the discs become damaged, causing them to rupture. A disc that has ruptured is called a herniated disc. A herniated disc may touch against the spinal cord or press directly against spinal nerve roots, causing the car accident victim much pain and discomfort. Disc herniation is most common in the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back). Damage to the cervical discs (neck area) may cause you pain not only in your neck but your shoulders, arms, and hands. You may also encounter numbness and/or weakness in any of those areas.

Car accident injuries to the neck are unquestionably debilitating and could lead to greater problems. Much diagnostic testing and treatment may be necessary in order for you to realize any relief from your pain. In addition, surgery is sometimes required to correct neck injuries. Mounds of medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering are all good reasons for you to seek skilled injury attorney if you have been injured in a car accident caused by another driver.
