Common car accident injuries leave you weak in the knees

Knee injuries incurred as a result of a Bucks County car accident are debilitating. You may consider a car accident victim who has not suffered severe head, neck or back injuries, paralysis, or death, to be "just fine". This would not be accurate. Auto accident injuries that affect leg and/or knee movement harshly alter a person's life.

Common Car Accident Knee Injuries

- Fractures
- Sprained or Torn ACL
- Sprained or Torn MCL
- Meniscal Injuries

Causes of Knee Injuries

Knee injuries from car accidents occur due to two main reasons:

1. The impact of the car crash. This great force may cause your knee to slam into the steering wheel, car door, dashboard, or seat front (if you are seated in a rear seat).

2. A violent twisting of the knee. This occurs in a car accident when your foot is planted firmly on the floor of the vehicle upon impact and the knee is forced in another direction.

Knee Fractures are mostly caused by moderate to high force being inflicted upon the knee, such as the type of force common in Bucks County or Mercer County car accidents. There will be knee swelling and bruising, intense knee pain, and the inability to walk.

Torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is considered to be the most common type of car accident knee injury and is brought on primarily by an unnatural twisting, or hyperextension, of the knee. Most who sustain torn ACLs experience immediate intense pain, rapid swelling, and the inability to walk. A popping sound may be heard at the time of the injury.

Torn MCL (medial collateral ligament) is a knee injury from car accidents in which a strong blow to the outer knee damages the inner knee. This is usually caused by direct impact, such as the knee hitting a hard internal piece of the car.

Meniscal injuries to the knee occur when the knee undergoes blunt force and the connective tissue (menisci) within the knee that protect the ends of the knee bones become cracked or torn. A torn meniscus creates friction in the knee joint, bringing severe pain and sometimes causing the knee joint to snap out of place.
