Breaking Down Medical Jargon

Seeing a doctor after a New Jersey or Pennsylvania car accident could result in your doctor diagnosing injuries resulting from your car accident. In Bucks County, there are many injury doctors to choose from whom use specialized language when talking about your personal injury. Medical doctors will often show you diagrams of the exact injury you are suffering from and where it is on the body, but you could still leave your doctor's office unclear of what exactly the car accident did to your body. The lawyers at this experienced Bucks County personal injury law firm are here to explain the most common car accident injuries, in plain English.

If the doctor tells you that you have an injury called a CERVICAL SPRAIN, what that actually means is that you have a stretched or torn muscle in your neck. Symptoms are neck pain that worsens with movement, a stiff neck, swelling and tenderness of the neck muscle. Other injuries related to cervical sprains are thoracic and lumbar sprains which basically have all of the same causes and symptoms, they are just at different parts of your spine.

ITBS stands for Iliotibial band syndrome. An ITBS injury is a common injury to the thigh that is also common in runners but is becoming increasingly common in Pennsylvania car accidents. Symptoms include knee pain and can travel up the leg to the hip with walking or going up and down stairs.

SCIATICA is basically pain, weakness, tingling or a feeling of numbness in the leg. It is caused when the sciatic nerve is injured or when there is compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins at the spine and continues down the backside of each leg and it controls the muscles that are behind the knee and lower leg.

MYOFASCIAL RESTRICTION is a long name for when the fascia (connective tissue) becomes inflamed and the part of the tissue that gives the fascia its gliding effect becomes hard and it presses down on the tissue. After an accident it could take three to six months for this injury to present itself.

A SUBDURAL HEMATOMA is when blood collects at the surface of the brain otherwise known as a brain bleed. Subdural hematomas are usually caused when the brain experiences some sort of trauma such as from a serious head injury. When a subdural hematoma occurs after a serious head injury, this is referred to as acute, which is the deadliest of any type of head injury. In this case, the blood fills the brain area extremely rapidly causing the compression of brain tissue.
