Accident Injury: Cosmetic Scar Reduction

Some injuries from accidents and surgeries to repair them cause physical scars. We tend to think of cosmetic repair as only for vanity's sake, but for scarring victims of accidents, cosmetic repair or reduction of a scar can mean a truly full recovery. There are probably a multitude of useless do-it-yourself products that claim to reduce a scar. However, one that is known to be effective is a product known as silicon sheeting.

What is silicon sheeting?

Silicon sheeting is sold by several manufacturers and can be very effective in cosmetically reducing a scar. It is composed of silicone and Teflon® and when combined may be known as silicon or silon. The "sheets" are sold in body shapes and are sticky on one side to adhere to your body and fabric backed on the other, much like a Band-Aid®. They are washable and reusable and depending on the particular piece, may be used for a couple of months before requiring replacement.

Silicon sheeting can only be used after all scabs from your accident injury have healed, but the sooner they are used immediately thereafter, the more effective these products will be. Certainly you will need to be sure that your Philadelphia or Bucks County physician knows you will use them.

There, of course, is no way to determine whether the cosmetic use of silicon sheeting reduces a scar on your body more quickly or successfully than your own body might have done unless you would use the sheeting on one scar and not another to see. These products are known to be helpful to reduce redness and "puffiness" of scaring injuries.
