At Home First Aid tips for a Broken Foot

A broken foot is painful. When it is a result of an accident, you will most likely be taken to the hospital so they can check for further personal injury. But what happens when you leave the hospital? Bucks County personal injury lawyer Michael L. Saile, Jr. provides tips for first aid.

1. Stabilization and elevation. Use a splint to keep the foot as straight as possible so the bone heals properly (a.k.a so you don't end up with a crooked foot). Wrapping the foot in something like a cloth bandage will work, but make sure to keep it loose enough as to not cut off circulation. Elevate the foot on a pillow or stack of books. This will prevent swelling and promote healthy blood flow.
2. Buddy taping. This is for broken toes. The idea is to tape the broken toe(s) along with the toe on either side of it. This will provide stabilization for the broken toe and help keep it in place. It is helpful to put some kind of buffer in between each toe to prevent irritation. Something like a cotton ball works perfectly.
3. Crutches. Crutches can be found at most pharmacies these days, so utilize them. They might be uncomfortable but walking on a broken foot is not only painful, but it can also hinder the healing process and could cause more damage. Make sure the crutches are the right height. If they are not, you can take them to a doctor and have them adjust them so they fit properly.

After a visit to the hospital following a PA car accident, it is possible that a broken foot will be put into a cast, but it depends on where the broken bone is that is. Broken toes aren't usually casted because of the lack of space allowance.

If your doctor does not prescribe pain medication, things like Advil and Aleve can work to relieve pain and also act as anti-inflammatories. Rest is also important to the recovery process. The more you try to use the foot to test it for pain levels, the more harm you could be doing. Wait for the doctor to give you the okay to start using your foot again.
