Bicycle Safety is more important than ever!

Winter weather has finally broke and we will soon see bicyclists return to the road. Bicycling is a favorite activity for many people in the Philadelphia area. Unfortunately, bicyclists often overlook the grave dangers of bike accidents. If you have never been injured in a bicycle accident or know someone who was, you may not appreciate the seriousness of a bicycle accident. Bicycle accidents often involve the most serious injuries including broken bones, traumatic brain injury, and even death.

Are PA Bike Routes safe? Hardly...

The City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are big supporters of bicycling. Philadelphia and Pennsylvania have designated many roads and bike routes. Many two lane streets in Center City Philadelphia such as Spruce Street and Pine street have been converted to one lane for autos and one lane reserved for bikes. Although roads may be designated bike routes, this does not mean they are safe for bicycle riders.

The PA injury lawyers at Saile & Saile LLP represented the father of a Bucks County bicyclist who was killed in Buckingham Township on his way home from a long ride from Southampton, PA to upper Bucks County and then back to Southampton. On the bicycle rider's trip back home from upper Bucks County, dusk set in and the lighting conditions deteriorated. Unfortunately, for reasons still unknown, the bicycle rider stayed out on the road past dusk wearing dark clothing and no lighting as required by Pennsylvania law. While on Forrest Grove Road, in Buckingham, PA, an elderly driver and his wife approached the bicyclist from behind and collided with the rear tire of the bicycle. The elderly couple did not see the bicyclist before impact. The bicyclist's head collided with the automobile's windshield causing his instant death.

Safe Bike Riding is a must

The lesson to be learned here is that as a bicyclist, YOUR SAFETY should be the number on concern. Just like any other person on the road, YOU MUST make sure that automobile drivers perceive you and AVOID you. You MUST make yourself VISIBLE to other drivers AT ALL TIMES. This can easily be done by wearing bright clothing during the day and having proper lighting on your bike at dusk, dawn, and of course at night.

Under most circumstances, bike accidents can be avoided. Bicyclists now have a NEW PROBLEM. It's actually everyone's problem. Distracted driving is causing accidents, including bicycle accidents all over Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It is difficult for bicycle riders to protect themselves against distracted driving. In order to avoid bicycle accidents, riders should make eye contact with each automobile driver that they encounter. When bicyclists are approached on the road from behind, bicyclists must also be sure that automobile drivers are paying attention to them so that a car-bicycle accident can be avoided.
