Are Teen Girls More Prone to Distracted Driving in Bucks County?

Research is constantly being conducted regarding the dangers of distracted driving. A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shed additional light on the dangers faced by teen drivers, especially girls.

Teen Girls at Greater Risk of Distracted Driving
It has long been known that teens are particularly prone to distracted driving. The distractions are great and range from passengers in their cars to electronic devices. AAA researchers took their investigation a step further by identifying that teenage girl drivers are twice as likely to use an electronic device than their male counterparts.

Distracted driving can be fatal, as in the case of Alexis Summers. Around the same time that the Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill that would make texting and driving illegal in the state, Alexis was killed in a single-car accident. It is believed that she was texting before she lost control of her vehicle. A cell phone was uncovered at the scene of the crash, which had a partial text message typed out.

What You Can Do as a Parent
If you are the parent of a teenage girl, this new information can be unsettling, to say the least. The good news is that you can take proactive steps to ensure your child understands the dangers of distracted driving. You can start by explaining the hazards of not paying attention behind the wheel and set ground rules on what is and is not allowed for your teen. Also, don’t ever forget the significance of leading by example. Make sure you exhibit safe driving behavior and avoid distractions, too.

To learn about legal rights following a distracted driving accident in Pennsylvania, contact an experienced Bucks County personal injury lawyer at Saile & Saile LLP by calling 215-860-5800 or toll free at 800-860-5801.

Pennsylvania, which adopted the Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) program on September 29, 2008, is working to reduce the number of Pennsylvania auto accidents, which involve commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).
The state adopted the program after its success was shown in Washington State, which was a pilot state for TACT. In combination with the Click it or Ticket campaign, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has seen favorable results. For example, the national fatality rate in accidents involving trucks declined 12% between 2007 and 2008.

Currently, Pennsylvania is one of 15 states which have adopted the TACT program. This program uses posters, billboards, and other safety awareness messages to get the word out to drivers that they need to be careful when in the vicinity of CMVs.

Law enforcement officials use marked vehicles, unmarked vehicles and aircraft to observe the driving behaviors of passenger vehicles (PVs) and CMVs.

Through this program, the state hopes to:

Increase the public's knowledge of the restrictions of CMVs

Issue citations for those who drive dangerously around CMVs

Reduce dangerous behaviors in the vicinity of CMVs

Reduce the number of Pennsylvania truck wrecks

If you have been injured by a trucker who was driving aggressively or negligently, you may be able to seek compensation.
Do You Know How to Get Rid of Blind Spots in Mirrors?

There are hundreds of thousands of drivers on the roads every day. One thing that most of them have in common is their thought that blind spots are just a part of driving. But this simply is not true! We have been taught that blind spots are something that we just have to deal with - something that we have to remember to check by taking our focus off of the roadway in front of us and looking over our shoulder. This is not only dangerous, it is also unnecessary. There is a better way.
One way to rid yourself of dangerous blind spots is through after-market additions, such as small blind spot mirrors that attach to your existing mirrors. These mirrors increase your field of view, thus eliminating the need to check over your shoulder. There are also other dealer-offered additions that alert you if something is in your blind spot. One such example is Ford's Blind Spot Information System. This system, which costs about $1600, illuminates a warning light on the side mirror if an object is detected on the side of the vehicle. While these are both helpful options, there is a free method of blind spot elimination that is available to all drivers.

By following the Blind Spot and Glare Elimination (BGE) method of mirror adjustment, you could rid yourself of dangerous blindspots forever! This will certainly take some getting used to, as it's hard to learn to rely on your mirrors rather than checking over your shoulder. However, it will be well worth it.

Keep in mind that this method should only be used when you have all mirrors available. Do not use this method of mirror adjustment if something in your vehicle is blocking the full view of your rear-view mirror.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a Bucks County car accident, you need to seek legal help.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and American Trucking Associations found that nearly 28% of truck drivers suffer from sleep apnea. This percentage is very much in line with the number of people who suffer from sleep apnea in general.
The effects of sleep apnea on a trucker can leave the driver drowsy and unable to give full concentration to the road, leading to a tragic Pennsylvania tractor trailer wreck. But the effects of sleep apnea on others who are not drivers can be just as dangerous, especially if they get behind the when of a car.

Sleep apnea is a highly treatable disorder, but many people do not seek treatment because they are unaware that they suffer from the disorder.

Risks of suffering from sleep apnea include:

Age 40 or older

Overweight

Large neck size; ≥ 17 inches for men or 16 inches for women

Small upper airway

Recessed chin

Small jaw

Large overbite

Smoking or alcohol use

A family history of sleep apnea

Symptoms to watch for include:

Excessive daytime drowsiness

Morning headaches and/or nausea

Loud snoring

Gasping or choking during sleep

Disturbed sleep

Frequent waking to use bathroom

Impotence/loss of sexual desire

Decreased concentration or memory problems

Increased irritability and/or depression

If you or someone you love has been suffering from these symptoms, it may be wise to consult with a physician.

Driving a vehicle while drowsy is not only negligent, it is extremely dangerous.
Increased DUI Checkpoints Help Police Crack Down on PA Drunk Driving

From mid-August through the Labor Day weekend, police enforcement throughout Pennsylvania will be raised as part of the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" initiative. The purpose of this initiative, which is targeted at drivers who are operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is to decrease the number of drunken driving crashes in Pennsylvania, as well as throughout the rest of the nation.
Throughout this time, local police departments - as well as nearly 600 others statewide - will be conducting checkpoints in order to target those motorists who make the negligent decision to drink and drive. They will also be increasing the number of patrols who are watching for drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Philadelphia, which has received federal funds to back this initiative, will be increasing their number of DUI checkpoints throughout the area.

In order to make sure you don't become one of the statistics, always make sure to designate a driver if you're going to be drinking. If this isn't an option, make sure you have a plan as to how you will be getting home, such as by bus or taxi. You may even consider staying with a friend if you have one who lives near the area where you will be.

No matter what you do, never make the decision to drive after you have been drinking. Not only could you wreck your car, you could also wreck your life.

If you or someone you love has been seriously or fatally injured in a drunken driving crash in Pennsylvania, the Bucks County car accident attorneys at Saile & Saile are here to help.
Summer Heat Causes Dangerous Pennsylvania Big Rig Tire Explosions

We've all been there: The sun is beating down and the heat is sweltering. You have to get into your hot, hot car and wait - for what feels like forever - for the air conditioning to cool down your vehicle to a temperature that is better suited for breathing than boiling. But you aren't the only one who is affected by excessive summer heat.
The summer heat is taking a toll on tractor trailer tires, leading to an increased number of Pennsylvania truck wrecks caused by blowouts. The increased heat leads to a higher pressure in tires, which can be detrimental in the case of tractor trailers.

Tractor trailer tires, which are already under an immense amount of pressure from the weight of the truck, are exposed to greater pressure as the air temperature rises. The hot air temperature, combined with the heat of the tires on the roadway, can increase the chance of a tire blowout.

Semi truck tire blowouts may cause the trucker to swerve, causing devastating Pennsylvania auto accidents. The tire debris on the roadway could also cause other motorists to swerve and cause an accident.

If you have been injured in a Pennsylvania car crash because of a big rig tire blowout, you may be eligible to seek compensation for your injuries. Contact a Bucks county truck accident lawyer for more information.
