Pennsylvania Hopes TACT Program Will Decrease PA Truck Accidents

Pennsylvania, which adopted the Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) program on September 29, 2008, is working to reduce the number of Pennsylvania auto accidents, which involve commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).

The state adopted the program after its success was shown in Washington State, which was a pilot state for TACT. In combination with the Click it or Ticket campaign, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has seen favorable results. For example, the national fatality rate in accidents involving trucks declined 12% between 2007 and 2008.

Currently, Pennsylvania is one of 15 states which have adopted the TACT program. This program uses posters, billboards, and other safety awareness messages to get the word out to drivers that they need to be careful when in the vicinity of CMVs.

Law enforcement officials use marked vehicles, unmarked vehicles and aircraft to observe the driving behaviors of passenger vehicles (PVs) and CMVs.

Through this program, the state hopes to:

Increase the public's knowledge of the restrictions of CMVs
Issue citations for those who drive dangerously around CMVs
Reduce dangerous behaviors in the vicinity of CMVs
Reduce the number of Pennsylvania truck wrecks

The purpose of the legislation known as Kyleigh's Law, together with New Jersey's graduated driver license (GDL) program, is to reduce the number of New Jersey car accidents caused by teens and to enhance the safety of both teens and others on NJ's busy roadways, such as Route 1, I-95, and I-295, Route 206, and Route 130 throughout Burlington and Mercer Counties.

The leading cause of death for U.S. teens is auto accidents, with risk of an auto accident being highest for those aged 16-19. New Jersey sought to stay ahead of this curve and instituted one of the strictest graduated driver license programs in the country in an effort to reduce the number of teen-related car accidents and car accident injuries. New Jersey currently boasts one of the lowest teen car accident fatality rates in the nation. Is there a direct correlation between these two actualities? Perhaps. However, the 2010 addition of Kyleigh's Law to NJ's GDL program has been a very contentious issue.

Does Kyleigh's Law really keep young drivers safe?

The most objectionable part of Kyleigh's Law seems to be the mandatory red decals. Many NJ parents (and teens) want the law repealed, claiming it does little to reduce car accidents but rather promotes police profiling and increases the risk of young drivers being stalked.

A compromise of sorts may be to require all new drivers to affix the red decal to their license plates, and not just the young new drivers. This would eliminate the age discrimination factor. As the law stands now, only those drivers under the age of 21 must display the decals. Those who base their dislike of the law on age discrimination and the fear that young men and women are targets for predators may be appeased. But let's face it, the majority of new drivers are young people. So, what if the next highest risk group for car accidents fatalities were also required to affix the same red decal to their license plates? That group would be senior drivers, aged 65 and over. It can be argued that this age group also creates a hazard on our roadways due to the realities of aging: diminishing vision, slower response time, and dulling cognitive skills.

While many despise Kyleigh's Law, it does have its supporters, a group debating that the law does, in fact, encourage teens to drive safely and obey all rules of the road. The restrictions that are in place enforce attentive driving over distracted driving and allow teens to focus on becoming skilled drivers, which is a benefit to all who travel throughout New Jersey.

There is not yet enough evidence to know who is right. For now the courts have decided the law remains on the books. Deadly distracted driving accident results in lawsuit in Philadelphia | Injuries attorneys

New Jersey woman files injury lawsuit in Philadelphia

A bus accident on September 11, 2010 resulted in traumatic head injuries, neck injuries, and back injuries for New Jersey resident Candice Burks. Ms. Burks was traveling on a double-decker bus from Philadelphia to Toronto when the bus hit an elevated railroad bridge and flipped onto its side. Four passengers were fatally injured and twenty-eight were injured. The fatal injuries should result in wrongful death cases.

A civil suit was filed by Ms. Burks' attorney in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court on October 15. The named defendants were Mr. Tomaszewski and two New Jersey companies that owned and operated the bus. The suit claims that Ms. Burks suffered permanent cognitive and physical impairment due to the bus accident and that she seeks at least $50,000 in damages for her accident injuries.

According to PennDot, the fall season brings about many different driving hazards that could lead to car accidents on Bucks County roadways. The normal driving factors such as sun glare, fog, and wet roads will now be complicated by wet leaves, frost and deer.

PennDot informs us that deer are in breeding season in the fall and are mainly feed at night being most active between sunset and sunrise. 46% of all reported Pennsylvania car accidents involved deer during the months of October and November (in the past 5 years). 78% of these auto accidents occurred between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In 2009, there were 3,000 Pennsylvania auto accidents reported involving deer injuring 600 people and killing five.

To avoid auto accidents with deer, PennDot recommends slowing down, being vigilant (especially in the dawn and dusk hours, and increase following distance between vehicles on the road where deer frequent.

A Chester County car accident involves a police chief who leaves the scene of his own accident and leaves a woman injured. The incident took place last month along Route 82 in Kennett Township.

The force of the impact sent the Expedition onto the curb where it slid across a grass median and flipped several times before finally coming to rest upside down.

Unfortunately, a 21-year-old male passenger was ejected from the sport utility vehicle (SUV). The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Rescue crews transported the driver of the Ford to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The driver was treated with numerous fractures. There were no other injuries reported as a result of the crash.

The fatal Northeast Philadelphia accident remains under investigation by local authorities as they try to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the SUV.

Bristol Township Car Accident Involves 35 Vehicles, Leaves Several Injured

A Bristol Township car accident involving 35 vehicles left several people injured as the vehicles reportedly collided in icy road conditions. The accident took place at approximately 2:45 on Sunday morning, October 30, 2011, along Interstate 95.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the 35-vehicle accident occurred early Sunday morning on northbound I-95 near mile marker 38. It was unclear as to how many people were injured in the wreck and whether or not anyone was hospitalized or killed as a result of the crash. Police did not immediately release the identities or any information about those involved in the accident.

Weather is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. Saturday's storm left nearly 18 inches of snow on the ground and left a slippery coating of black ice on the interstate. The storm also left tens of thousands of residents without power in Bucks County.

The early-morning Bristol Township car accident remains under investigation by local authorities. It is unclear as to what or who may have caused the 35-vehcile pile-up.

Bucks County Car Accident Claims Lives of Two

A Bucks County car accident involving a single vehicle claims the lives of two people after the driver loses control of the car and slams into a guardrail. The incident took place at approximately 3:00 on Sunday morning, October 30, 2011, in Middletown Township.

According to local authorities, the storm-related crash occurred when the driver of a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero, traveling southbound on Interstate 95, lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a guardrail. The force of the impact sent the vehicle into the embankment where it rolled over and landed on the westbound shoulder of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The driver has been identified as Richard Nagbe, 25, of Upper Derby. Unfortunately, Mr. Nagbe and his female passenger, Dehkontee Kpou, 31, of Philadelphia, lost their lives in the single-vehicle crash. Reports indicate that the interstate was covered in ice, which may have played a role in the fatal wreck.

Truck Crashes Into House in Philadelphia, Driver and Passenger Flee

An elderly couple was awakened at about 2:30 a.m. on the morning of October 8, 2011 by what they thought was a loud explosion. What the couple believed was an explosion actually turned out to be the destruction of their front porch by a pick-up truck.

The Philadelphia car wreck occurred on Saturday morning on Langford Street. The Dodge Dakota truck was speeding down the street at a high rate of speed and lost control at the dead-end. The truck then proceeded up over the curb, across the elderly couple's lawn and into the front porch of their house.

The driver of the truck, as well as the front seat passenger, both fled from the scene. They have not yet been apprehended.

Two men, who were riding in the back seat of the vehicle, sustained injuries in the accident - one serious and one critical. They were both taken to Aria Hospital-Torresdale for treatment.

The elderly couple was awakened with quite a scare, but did not sustain any physical injuries in the accident.

It is unknown whether the crash caused significant structural damage to the house.

Missing Body of Driver in Philadelphia Car Crash Found in Schuylkill

A Philadelphia car crash, which occurred on Wednesday, September 28th, left authorities with a missing persons case on their hands when the driver of a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis was unable to be found.

The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ferry Road and Kelly Drive in Philadelphia. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Ferry Road when it slammed into the riverbank wall. The car then plunged into the Schuylkill River.

The driver, 29-year-old Chrystal Wallace-Ferrall, was quickly swept away from the accident scene. Witnesses claimed that they spotted her in the river near the third bridge pillar before she was swept away by the current.

Rescue crews searched the river for Wallace-Ferrall, even using sonar equipment to locate her body; however, they were not successful.

On Monday afternoon, pedestrians discovered Wallace-Ferrall's body along the river near Hunting Park Avenue and Kelly Drive, about one mile from the scene of the accident.

Wallace-Ferrall's mother, Yolanda Wallace, stated that Wallace-Ferrall went to get her hair done and didn't make it home. She said that Wallace-Ferrall loved her two children, ages 3 and 9, very much. She believes that the accident must have been caused by a mechanical failure.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the accident, but they are examining the vehicle to determine if any brake failure or other mechanical failure occurred.

Trucker Found Responsible for Fatal Bucks County Motorcycle Accident

Ernest Demetrius Cohens, the trucker who killed a motorcyclist in a Bucks County truck crash in early February, has been found to be solely responsible for the tragic accident.

The accident, in which 55-year-old Terry Kriebel was struck by Cohens' tractor-trailer, occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on February 3, 2011. The cause of the accident has been determined to be due to Cohens' negligent decision to make an illegal U-turn on Route 309, directly into the path of Kriebel's motorcycle.

After the accident occurred, Cohens assisted another motorist in covering Kriebel's body with a sheet before re-boarding his truck and leaving the scene. Cohens was arrested nearly 40 minutes later after continuing on a reckless driving spree in which he struck two utility poles and a bridge.

Police shortly learned that they were dealing with a driver who had a history of negligence and reckless driving. Cohens has faced 22 license suspensions since April 2007, as well as an additional 25 motor vehicle violations on the tractor trailer he was driving.

Cohens is facing charges of vehicular homicide, accidents involving death while not properly licensed, recklessly endangering another person, flight to avoid apprehension, and a number of other motor vehicle violations.

In addition to the number of charges against him for the wreck, Cohens will also face charges for possession of child pornography.

Cohens remains in Bucks County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 cash bail.

9-Year-Old Behind the Wheel in Philadelphia Car Crash

The scene of a Philadelphia car accident on October 2, 2011 was unlike anything most officers have ever experienced. Not because of the damage at the scene, but because of the driver behind the wheel of the vehicle.

When officers arrived upon the scene of the accident at Roosevelt Boulevard near Rhawn Street, they discovered that the driver of the vehicle was none other than a 9-year-old boy.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. after the boy took his parents' 1999 Chevy Malibu for a drive. As the car was traveling northbound on Roosevelt Boulevard, the young boy lost control. The vehicle then flipped and crashed into a tree.

The boy was taken to Saint Christopher's Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was listed to be in critical condition.

Police have not released the identity of the boy or his parents. They also have not yet released how far the vehicle was driven or even how the boy was able to gain access to the vehicle.
Luckily, no one else was injured in the accident.

Up and Coming Soccer Player Killed in Tragic Chester County Car Crash

A junior soccer player from Owen J. Roberts High School was involved in a tragic Chester County car accident on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

The accident happened in the 1100 block of Bethel Church Road. Kelsey Lynn Kramer was driving on Bethel Church Road when she lost control of her 2004 Honda Civic, crossed over the southbound lane, and struck a tree.

Ridge Fire Company rescued Kramer from her vehicle and transported her to Reading Hospital and Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition.

Kramer succumbed to her injuries and passed away on Friday morning.

During the days Kramer was in the hospital, students made a makeshift memorial at the site of the crash. Officers were forced to shut the road at one point to allow for the overwhelming outpour of students and others who were leaving mementos and praying for Kramer.

Kelsey Kramer played in her first varsity game for OJR on the day of the crash. The OJR soccer team plans to dedicate their season to Kramer. The team also plans to wear armbands with her initials and the number 18 on them, as well as wear purple shoe laces since purple was Kramer's favorite color. As a final tribute, OJR Coach Joe Margusity plans to have Kramer's jersey framed and retired after her teammates have a chance to sign it. The jersey will be presented to Kramer's family.

Confused Elderly Man Injures Wife and Daughter in Delco Car Accident

On September 12, 2011, a confused elderly man injured his wife and daughter in a Pennsylvania auto accident.

At about 9:30 a.m., 89-year-old George Metzger was waiting in the driver's seat of his Buick - with the vehicle stopped in reverse - while his wife and daughter were getting in.

The elderly man mistakenly applied the accelerator as his daughter, 62, was helping his wife, 85-year-old Rose Metzger, into the vehicle. Both of the women were seriously injured in the accident.

The daughter sustained trauma to her head and chest and was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) by air.

Rose Metzger was transported to HUP by ambulance with injuries to her lower torso. She was listed to be in fair condition.

George Metzger was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

This accident is currently under investigation; however, no changes are expected to be filed.

Fun Family Outing Ends in Fatal Bucks County Distracted Driving Wreck

A Doylestown man and his wife took their 22-month-old granddaughter out on Friday afternoon to shop for Labor Day party supplies. The trip, however, ended in a fatal Bucks County distracted driving crash.

70-year-old Edwin Kuenle, of Doylestown, was driving his Nissan Altima on Upper State Road in New Britain Township when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming Crown Victoria.

Edwin Kuenle sustained fatal injuries in the accident. His wife, Barbara DeVenuto Kuenle, 67, and his 22-month-old granddaughter were riding in the rear seat of the vehicle and survived the accident. Barbara DeVenuto Kuenle was transported to Abington Memorial Hospital where she was listed to be critical condition after the accident, having suffered broken ribs, legs and arms. Their granddaughter was treated for minor injuries and was released.

The driver of the Crown Victoria, a man from Hatboro who is said to be in his mid-30s, was listed in good condition at Abington Memorial Hospital. His 4-year-old son was also in the vehicle. He was flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was also listed in good condition.

Police have stated that they believe the accident was caused by distracted driving. The driver of the Crown Victoria appears to have been distracted and swerved across lanes, into the path of the Nissan Altima.

Bus Driver Sentenced for Fatal Montgomery County Bus Accident

A bus driver has been sentenced to jail time for a fatal Montgomery County bus accident in which a 27-year-old man was killed. This was the second accident in his driving career in which he has caused fatal injuries.

Ten years ago, 39-year-old Frederick R. Poust III, blew through a stop sign and caused a fatal Bucks County car accident in which a 2 ½-year-old girl was killed. Authorities indicated that he was talking on his cell phone at the time.

It seems like Poust would have learned his lesson of the dangers of inattentive driving, but in February 2010 he did it again. The difference this time is that Poust was driving a school bus full of 45 students.

Poust failed to stop before turning the loaded school bus left into the Perkiomen Valley Middle School West in Lower Frederick. His sudden turn into traffic caused an accident with an oncoming 1999 Honda Civic.

The driver of the vehicle, 42-year-old Perkiomenville resident Freddie Carroll, suffered severe injuries in the accident and now requires the use of a cane. However, his passenger, Richard Taylor, 27, of Gilbertsville, was not so lucky. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

Tapes from the bus' video surveillance system show that Poust was not only tired and inattentive, but he was also talking on a cell phone at the time of the accident. He also failed to come to a complete stop at ten different stop signs prior to the accident.

On Friday, August 19, 2011, Poust pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and was sentenced to one to two years in the Montgomery County prison. He was also ordered to serve five years probation and 200 hours of community service.

A relaxing lunch at a Montgomery County Taco Bell turned tragic when an elderly man slammed into the restaurant, injuring four.

The Montco auto accident occurred just before 1 p.m. on August 24, 2011, when a Mercury Grand Marquis smashed into the side of the Taco Bell in East Norriton Township at Colonial Drive and DeKalb Pike. It follows a similar accident from just one month ago in which a vehicle driven by an elderly man slammed into a Center City Burger King.

The driver of the Grand Marquis, an 85-year-old man, was backing out of his parking space on the south side of the building when he rear-ended another vehicle. He then put the car in drive and accelerated very rapidly through the glass and into the dining area of the restaurant.

Four people were injured in the incident, including a 47-year-old Philadelphia woman who was trapped beneath the vehicle for more than 30 minutes. She was flown to Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia where she received treatment for her injuries.

A 57-year-old woman from Hatfield was also transported by medevac. She was taken to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for lacerations from flying glass. She was not struck by the vehicle.

Two other victims were transported via ambulance to Mercy Suburban Hospital. The result of their injuries is not yet known.

The driver, who was also treated at Mercy Suburban Hospital, has not been charged in the incident.

The accident investigation is still underway; the reason for the driver's rapid acceleration into the restaurant has not yet been identified.

Teen Driver of Fatal Montco, PA Car Crash Faces Drunken Driving Charges

The driver of a fatal Montgomery County car crash,which claimed the lives of two teenage lacrosse players in August, has been charged with drunken driving.

Connor James McNicholas, 19, of Horsham, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while driving drunk, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle and lying to police, as well as multiple other related offenses. These offenses are charged in connection with the fatal Montco car accident on August 6th in which he crashed on Witmer Road near Norristown Road, killing two of the passengers in his vehicle.

McNicholas' blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) at the time of the accident was 0.117, which is more than five times the legal limit for an underage person. It is also over the limit for adults, which is 0.08. If he is found to be guilty on both of the homicide by vehicle while DUI charges, he will face a minimum of six years in state prison, as each charge carries a mandatory three-year sentence in prison.

One of the surviving passengers in the crash, Darryl Neville Jr., 18, of Darby, has painted a horrific picture of the moments before the crash. He told investigators that he witnessed the speedometer display 99 mph before the car failed to navigate the 25mph curve. Knowing that they were going to crash, he curled himself into a ball and braced himself for the devastating destruction that followed.

After spending one night in jail following his arrest and arraignment on August 17th, a $500,000 ($250,000 per victim) bail bond was posted and McNicholas was released from Montgomery County Prison.

Shocking Greyhound Bus Crash in Pennsylvania Injures Nearly Two Dozen

An early morning Greyhound tour bus crash on the Pennsylvania turnpike leaves nearly two dozen passengers injured.

The single vehicle crash occurred near 6:00 a.m. on August 13, 2011, in a rural area about a mile east of the Lebanon-Lancaster exit. The bus, which was traveling from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, struck the center concrete barrier, cut across the right-hand lanes of traffic, struck an embankment and overturned onto its side. Authorities have not yet said what caused the wreck of the Greyhound bus, driven by Kareem Edward Farmer, 24, of Philadelphia.

One woman was trapped inside the wreckage and nearly two dozen were injured; there were, however, no fatalities.

This accident occurred less than two months after a fatal bus accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, in which a tour bus rear-ended a tractor trailer.

Other accidents in recent months include a Virginia bus crash in May, which killed four passengers and injured 54, as well as a New York City bus crash in March which claimed the lives of 15 passengers.

According to Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, more than 30 people have been killed and more than 300 have been injured in tour bus accidents in 2011. These numbers are higher than the entirety of 2010, in which 30 people were killed and 272 were injured.

Philadelphia Hit-and-Run Crash Leaves Mother and Two Children Injured

A hit-and-run Philadelphia car crash in the early morning of August 7, 2011 left three people injured.

At around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning, a Land Rover ran a stop sign at the intersection of 5th and Venango Streets in Hunting Park and struck a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 24-year-old woman. Instead of stopping to render aid, both of the men in the Land Rover fled the scene.

The driver of the Malibu was taken to Temple University Hospital where she was treated for a fractured arm and pelvis.

Her two children, a 9-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, were also injured in the crash.

The girl was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries.

The boy suffered massive head injuries and is listed in critical condition at St. Christopher's Hospital. Police have stated that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Former Hatboro-Horsham Lacrosse Players Killed in PA Car Crash

A high-speed Montgomery County car crash claimed the lives of two teenage lacrosse players in the early hours of August 6, 2011.

At about 1:15 a.m., a single-vehicle car crash occurred near the intersection of Witmer and Norristown Roads in Horsham. The driver of the 2007 Honda Accord, Connor James McNicholas, 19, of Ambler, lost control of the car at a bend on westbound Witmer Road. The vehicle struck a curb, traveled off the roadway and hit multiple trees before coming to a stop in a property located at 600 Wade Avenue. Investigators believe the car traveled approximately 405 feet from the initial point of losing control to the location where it came to rest.

Two passengers in the vehicle, Robert Walker Nagel, 19, of Ambler, and Edward Taylor Coombs, 19, of Horsham, were fatally injured in the accident. Both Nagel and Coombs graduated from Hatboro-Horsham High School in 2010, where they played varsity lacrosse.

McNicholas, along with passengers Darryl Neville, Jr., 18, of Darby, and Timothy Kurpiel, 19, of Horsham, were taken to Abington Memorial Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to the eye-witness account of one of the passengers in the vehicle, McNicholas was driving near 100 mph before losing control. He also stated that the occupants were traveling from a party where mixed drinks and beer were consumed.

Investigators have cited excessive speed as a factor in the accident and are looking into alcohol as a contributing factor.

Woman in Disabled Vehicle Killed in Fatal Bucks County Car Wreck

A Ewing Township, New Jersey woman was killed on Tuesday evening when an SUV struck her disabled vehicle on I-95, resulting in a fatal Bucks County auto accident.

At approximately 6 p.m. on August 2, 2011, the 32-year-old woman's 1997 Mitsubishi Galant broke down on the Scudder Falls Bridge near Yardley. An approaching 2009 GMC Yukon, driven by Steven A. Wildeman, of Frankin Park, NJ, was unable to stop or avoid the Galant, resulting in a fatal rear-end collision.

The impact of the crash caused the Yukon to flip. Both Wildeman and his passenger, Jennifer Wildeman, were transported to St. Mary's Medical Center. The severity of their injuries is not known at this time.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed at Scudder Falls Bridge until after midnight.

Fast Food Fail: Car Crash Creates New Drive Thru in PA Burger King

Several people were injured in a Pennsylvania car accident on Monday afternoon when a vehicle, driven by an elderly man, plowed through the wall of a Burger King.

On July 25, 2011, witnesses saw an elderly man get into his sedan across the street from the Burger King at 8th and Market. As he was driving out of the parking lot, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the front of the busy Center City Burger King.

The crash injured six people inside the restaurant - one critically. The other injured patrons, as well as the driver of the vehicle, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Thankfully, no one was fatally injured in the accident.

The driver of the vehicle is not expected to face charges as investigators do not believe there was any criminal intent behind the crash.

Four Teens Fatally Injured in Single Vehicle Chester County Car Crash

A devastating suburban Philadelphia car crash on Sunday morning left four teens fatally injured.

At about 1 a.m. on July 3, a vehicle carrying four teens was speeding down Route 82 near its dangerous intersection with Route 322 in Chester County. According to a West Brandywine Township law enforcement officer, the Honda Prelude they were in was clocked traveling 73mph in a 35mph zone. The officer tried to catch up to them, but quickly lost sight of the vehicle.

As the Prelude approached a dip in the roadway, the driver failed to slow his speed. The car flew out of control, flipped up an embankment and crashed into a wooded area. All four teens were ejected from the vehicle. None were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Police have identified the victims as driver Collin Feiler McElroy, 16; Evan Pringle, 15; Jerry Warfel, 14; and Kyle Marsh, 17. All of the teens were students at Coatesville High School.

Speed has been determined as a contributing factor in the accident. Investigators have also noted the presence of illegal substances, such as marijuana and drug paraphernalia, at the crash scene.

14-Year-Old Causes Fatal Philly Car Crash, Charged With Murder

A fatal Philadelphia car crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning when a 14-year-old made the thoughtless decision to take his friends out for a joyride.

On June 30, Winston Charleston, of the 7100 block of State Road, decided it would be a fun idea to take his three friends out for a drive in his mother's car. Just after 2 a.m., as his mother slept at home, Charleston and his young friends were out on a joyride in Northeast Philadelphia.

Charleston, who was speeding down I-95 with his headlights off, flew past state troopers near the Academy Road exit. He then sped down the ramp, blew through a stoplight and lost control of the vehicle. The Chrysler Sebring spun out of control and slammed head-on into a Volkswagen Jetta and then into a Chevrolet Impala, both of which were traveling southbound near Willits Road.

The State Troopers arrived on the scene mere moments behind, but were too late to stop the devastating accident.

The Volkswagen, driven by Jessica Feldman, 20, of Huntingdon Valley sustained significant damage. Feldman was hospitalized with injuries to her shoulder and arm, but her boyfriend, Dan Fouracre, 22, of Bensalem, was fatally injured in the crash.

The occupants of the Chevrolet did not sustain serious injuries.

Charleston and his friends were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Charleston was treated at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus for neck pain, after which he was released into police custody.

Charleston, who has a history of police encounters and behavioral problems, was charged with murder as an adult. He also faces other assault and manslaughter charges.

Driver of Shocking Pennsylvania 7-Eleven Hit-and-Run Surrenders

The driver who struck a 7-Eleven employee in a horrifyingly violent Pennsylvania hit-and-run crash has finally surrendered to authorities.

The crash, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. on June 9, was caught on camera by the video surveillance in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Because of the shockingly unbelievable nature of the incident, the video has gone viral online, even being picked up by TMZ.

24-year-old Gejea Ejeta, an employee at the 7-Eleven, was outside changing the trash when a silver 2007 Dodge Caliber backed out of a parking spot near him. The vehicle then quickly accelerated forward, slamming into Ejeta and sending him crashing through the window of the store.

The driver of the Dodge, 32-year-old Willaisha Rankins, backed her vehicle away from the accident scene but did not get out to check on Ejeta. Passenger Tylese Pitts exited the front passenger side, but casually walked away as if nothing happened instead of seeing if Ejeta was okay - or alive. As the vehicle was still in reverse, one more passenger tumbled out of the back seat, only to then jump back into the car before it sped off.

On June 24, shortly after the release of the surveillance video, Rankins turned herself in to authorities. Rankins, who is a nurse, was arraigned on multiple charges including reckless driving as well as failure to stop and render aid.

Ejeta, who is a native of Ethiopia, miraculously survived the accident, sustaining injuries to his legs. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Rankins' BAC at the time of the accident is not known; however, Pitts has told authorities that they were out drinking before the incident.

Illegal U-turn Leads to Fiery Philadelphia Motorcycle Accident

The reckless actions of the driver of a Chrysler nearly killed a motorcyclist on June 22, 2011 in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia.

The driver of the Chrysler failed to see an oncoming motorcycle as he made an illegal U-turn at 2nd and Wyoming. As the vehicle was turning, the Suzuki motorcycle, driven by 24-year-old Walter Rivera, slammed into its side.

The impact of the Philadelphia motorcycle crash knocked Rivera unconscious and caused his bike to burst into flames, engulfing him as well.

SEPTA employees John Solecki, Joseph Benedict and Stephen Boon heard the crash and ran from their nearby office building to the aid of Rivera.

Solecki was the first to reach the scene and immediately ran into the flames, pulling Rivera out from under the bike with the help of another onlooker.

As Solecki tore off his shirt and tried to smother the flames, Boon came to the rescue with a fire extinguisher. After extinguishing the flames from Rivera, he tried to put out the burning motorcycle, but the fire extinguisher did not prove to be a match against its strong flames.

Police, paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene within seven minutes.

Rivera, who was wearing shorts without a helmet, is being treated at Temple hospital. He is in critical condition with third degree burns and broken bones, but is expected to recover from his injuries.

Charges against the driver of the Chrysler are still pending.

Jackass Star Ryan Dunn Killed in Fatal Pennsylvania Car Crash

On the early morning of June 20, Jackass star Ryan Dunn was fatally injured in a Pennsylvania car crash in Chester County.

Dunn, who is known for his roles on MTV shows Jackass, Viva La Bam and Homewrecker, was driving dangerously under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

As he was speeding in the westbound lanes of the Route 322 bypass, in West Goshen Township at speeds of approximately 130 mph, he lost control of his Porsche 911 GT3. Nearly 150 feet of skid marks suggest that Dunn may have been trying to exit the roadway at the Pottstown Pike exit, but failed to navigate the turn.

The Porsche careened through a guardrail, tumbled down a wooded ravine, crashed into a tree and burst into flames. It is impossible to determine whether Dunn and his passenger, Zachary Hartwell, 30, of West Chester, were killed by the impact or the flames.

Dunn's blood alcohol level was determined to be 0.196, which is over twice the legal limit. After thorough analysis of bar tabs, videos, photos and witness statements, investigators have been lead to believe that Dunn consumed 11 drinks - 3 beers and 8 shots of liquor - before getting behind the wheel and driving away.

Under Pennsylvania dram shop laws, establishments which continue to serve alcohol to inebriated individuals may be held legally responsible; however, Barnaby's of America in West Chester, PA - the bar at which Dunn and his friends were drinking - is not likely to be held liable for the death of Dunn and Hartwell as examination of surveillance video does not show Dunn to be visibly intoxicated.

A New Jersey Head-on Collision Leaves 4 in Critical Condition

A two-vehicle Gloucester Township, New Jersey automobile accident leaves four people critically injured.

On June 6, 2011, at about 2:20 p.m. on Monday, Joseph Riley, 36, of Sickerville, was driving a Ford Expedition on Slickerville Road. As he was driving south near Freeway Golf Course, he approached an oncoming Land Rover LR2.

The Land Rover, driven by Myrna Jackson, 40, of Pine Hill, was traveling northbound along Slicklerville Road. As the two vehicles approached one another, Riley's Expedition crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the Land Rover.

Riley, Jackson, and two passengers in Jackson's vehicle, Hafezzah Fitts, 35, and Gabriella Keith, 18, also of Pine Hill, were extracted from the crushed vehicles.

All four victims in the accident were transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where they were listed in critical but stable condition. Keith was transported to the hospital via medical helicopter.

This accident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed as of this time.

8-Year-Old Fatally Injured in Beverly, New Jersey Car Accident

A fatal Beverly, New Jersey auto accident claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl on June 5, 2011.

On Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m., Jazmine Nicole Perry was riding in the rear of a vehicle driven by her aunt, Stephanie Schwarz, 25, of Burlington City.

Perry and Schwarz were heading to pick up some snacks from the Pathmark supermarket on Route 130. As they were driving along Warren Street, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a telephone pole.

Perry suffered fatal injuries in the devastating accident.

Schwarz suffered multiple injuries and is currently in serious condition at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Olympic Boxing Hopefuls Suffer Traumatic Pennsylvania Auto Accident

Up and coming 29-year-old boxing twins suffered serious injuries in a Pennsylvania auto accident that occurred on Thursday, June 9, 2011.

Rock and Tiger Allen were driving on Bethlehem Pike when they lost control of their 1996 Ford Explorer and hit a tree. Police reported that the driver at the time of the incident was Tiger.

The men were taken to local hospitals by helicopter after sustaining serious injuries. According to his spokesman, Rock Allen was under the care of doctors at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital where he is said to be in serious condition. As of the latest reports, Tiger Allen was under the care of Hahnemann University Hospital where he is listed to be in intensive care.

The full extent of the twins' injuries have not been released as of yet.

Montgomery Township Deputy Scott Bendig is said to be in charge of the investigation of the crash.

The twins were hopefuls for the U.S. Olympic boxing team for the 2000 Olympics, but were disqualified due to trials regarding Tiger's weight. Rock returned to the Olympic ring in 2004 and joined the 2004 U.S. boxing team.

They are the sons of Naazim Richardson, who is the chief trainer for Bernard Hopkins, the WBC and The Ring light heavyweight champion. Rock and Tiger Allen had been mostly inactive in the ring in recent years.

After Serious Bucks County Accident

Boy Scout Ian Callahan, Riegelsville, PA, saved the life of his neighbor Art Frey after a serious Bucks County accident left Frey in grave danger when a speeding motorcyclist struck Frey's car. Callahan was honored with the Heroism Award for his role.

Given to only 149 scouts in 2010, according to the Boy Scouts of America's website, the award was presented to Callahan by U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick in a February 2011 service at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riegelsville.

The December 2009 Bucks County auto accident, which fatally injured the motorcyclist, happened as Frey turned his car onto Route 611 in front of Callahan's Upper Bucks home. Seeing Frey in trouble, Callahan acted partly on instinct, rushing to help the 71-year-old who suffers from emphysema.

Placing himself at risk, Callahan handled the serious situation by assisting Frey with an oxygen tank from the back seat as the accident left him hanging out of the car's wreckage, struggling to breathe.

Using first aid skills he learned as a Boy Scout, Callahan treated Frey for shock and helped him to remain calm, getting him off his back and to sit up to avoid choking (common to emphysema sufferers) until emergency personnel arrived.

Teen Critically Injured in Pennsylvania Pedestrian Accident

A 19-year-old Southampton teen was critically injured in a Pennsylvania pedestrian accident on May 26, 2011.

Richard Walton was riding his skateboard in the center lane of Street Road near the intersection of Street and Cushmore around 9:40 p.m. when he was struck by a 2006 Toyota Prius.

The driver of the Prius, 79-year-old Anna O'Riordan of Warminster, was traveling on Street Road, attempting to make a left hand turn near Cushmore.

The collision caused Walton to be knocked off his skateboard, landing on the ground. The impact of the fall rendered him unconscious.

Members of the Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad, Lower Southampton Township and Northampton Township police departments were present and provided assistance at the scene of the accident.

Walton was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital where he was listed to be in critical condition.

Authorities have not released any details as to any charges that may be filed against 79-year-old O'Riordan.

Police Chase Ends in Fatal Philly Car Wreck

A police chase, which started in Tinicum Township on May 23, ended in a fatal car crash in downtown Philadelphia.

The deadly chase began around noon when officers attempted to stop a Chevrolet Tahoe, near Route 291 and New Bartram Avenue in Lester, on suspicion of theft.

The SUV refused to stop and fled the area at a high rate of speed.

Police then set up spike strips on Bartram Avenue at Island Avenue in Philadelphia in an attempt to stop the Tahoe.

The driver of the SUV drove over the spike strips, disregarded the stop signal at the intersection, and crashed into a Chrysler Sedan which was crossing the intersection.

The collision sent the Tahoe rolling over onto its side.

Both the male driver and female passenger in the Chrysler Sedan were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where the driver was pronounced dead upon arrival. The condition of the passenger remains unknown.

The driver of the Tahoe fled on foot but was apprehended by civilian witnesses. Both he and his passenger were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia to receive treatment for their injuries.

Further investigation into the incident has revealed that the Tahoe was reported stolen. Charges are currently pending against the driver.

Son of Philadelphia Detective Killed in Fatal PA Pedestrian Accident

Timothy Conners, son of a veteran Philadelphia Police Detective Martin Connors, was killed in a Philadelphia pedestrian accident on May 17, 2011.

Shortly after dismissal of the school day at Archbishop Ryan High School, 15-year-old Conners headed across Academy Road to catch a bus. As he was crossing the street, he was struck by a Suzuki SUV.

Despite efforts to save him, Connors was pronounced dead at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus at 4:10 p.m., nearly 40 minutes after the accident, due to severe trauma to his body and head.

The driver of the vehicle stopped to render aid and does not appear to have done anything wrong. She is not expected to face charges in this tragic accident.

Fellow students, family, friends and neighbors came together at Archbishop Ryan High School for a vigil in Connors' memory just hours after his death.

74-Year-Old Woman May Be Charged in Fatal Pennsylvania Hit-and-Run

Patricia Maurer, 74, was arraigned on Monday due to her involvement in a fatal Pennsylvania hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of 26-year-old Kristy Bender.

Maurer is facing charges of careless driving and failure to render aid in an accident involving injury or death in connection with the April 27 hit-and-run crash in which Bender was fatally injured.

Although Maurer stated that she did not realize that she had hit anyone, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman isn't buying it. She claimed that, based upon the evidence which has been gathered by accident investigators, it seems impossible that Maurer couldn't have known that she struck someone.

As well as the damage to the bumper, front headlight and passenger side mirror of the Camry, Ferman noted that Bender was struck with enough force to knock off her shoes and socks and toss her body into a nearby lawn area.

Maurer, however, has claimed that she did not see Bender walking along the roadway and did not realize what she had done. She said that she felt a bump, but didn't stop to examine the damage until she arrived home. When she realized that she had damaged her vehicle, she contacted her son via text message to let him know and also contacted her insurance company to file a claim.

It wasn't until 9:04 p.m., over seven hours after the accident, that Maurer's relative contacted authorities to let them know of her possible involvement in the accident.

No charges have been filed against Maurer; however, she does face possible charges. If she is convicted of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, which is a felony charge, she may face a mandatory sentence of one year in jail with a possible maximum sentence of 3 ½ to 7 years in prison.

As more witnesses come forward, this accident may become clearer; however, cases like these are not always easy to decide.

74-Year-Old Woman Confesses to Fatal Pennsylvania Hit-and-Run

A 74-year-old Gilbertville woman has come forward after her involvement in a fatal Pennsylvania hit-and-run accident in Upper Providence Township.

On the afternoon of April 27, 2011, Kristy Bender, 26, of Royersford, was struck by a vehicle as she was walking home from her job at Kohl's Department Store.

Patricia Maurer did not realize she had struck a pedestrian until she arrived home on Wednesday afternoon and saw the damage to her vehicle. She immediately called her adult children who helped her notify the authorities.

There was no effort to hide the damage to the vehicle and Maurer's family immediately reported the accident to the Upper Providence Township Police.

Bender was pronounced dead upon arrival at Pottstown Memorial Hospital shortly after the 1:30 p.m. accident.

Under Pennsylvania law, motorists who are involved in a traffic accident which causes harm must stop and render aid; however, it is unsure whether law enforcement officials will file charges against Maurer since she came forward with details after the accident.

Driver, High on PCP and Yielding Axe, Plows Through Block Parties

A driver, who was high on PCP, plowed through two North Philadelphia block parties over the weekend, injuring a number of children.

54-year-old Alton Parker is facing a number of charges after plowing through the parties on the 2600 block of N. Myrtlewood Street on May 7.

He allegedly drove his Volvo station wagon the wrong way down a one way street, plowing through everything in his path.

Onlookers tried to stop the car, but Parker paid them no avail. He eventually plowed through a group of children, running over Alexus Jardine, 17, Andre Clark, 9, Andre's cousin Jahlil, 9, and another of Andre's cousins, a 2-year-old who has not been identified.

A mob chased Parker's car down the street. When the car finally stopped, it was covered with evidence of its destructive course, including food, icing and even a baby's pacifier on the windshield.

An off duty police officer was able to ram Parker's car into a building on West Sergent Street. Parker then got out of his vehicle and began swinging an axe, at which point the officer was forced to pull his gun.

Parker has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault while DUI, recklessly endangering another person, accident involving injury and other related offenses.

Andre Clark remains hospitalized at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in critical condition. He suffered broken ribs and a brain injury. His 2-year-old cousin is still hospitalized as well. Jahil suffered a fractured kneecap and foot and was treated and released. Alexus was not seriously injured in the accident and is nursing bumps and bruises.

Now it was time for the Philadelphia Daily News to break a story about the problem with bouncers and security personnel in Philadelphia's bars and night clubs. The Philadelphia Daily News turned to Bucks County injury attorney, Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. to highlight a recent Philadelphia personal injury case that he handled involving a serious injury caused by a bouncer in a Philadelphia bar.

The incident occurred the day after the Phillies World Series parade in November 2008. Mr. Saile's personal injury client, Dean Bowser, attended a Halloween party at the Field House Restaurant/Bar along with his brother and friend in Philadelphia. When it became time to pay the tab, the rude bartender had a problem working the credit card machine. Dean Bowser offered to pay cash and reached for the credit card that the bartender appeared to be handing to him. Mr. Bowser then was grabbed by bouncers from behind while the bartender jumped over the bar attacking Mr. Bowser. They all then fell to the floor where Bowser was punched and kicked. One bouncer pulled Mr. Bowser up and rushed him out the door where Mr. Bowser's arm broke through a plate glass window pane located in the door causing him severe injuries to his arm.

Mr. Saile consulted with esteemed security expert, Russell Kolins, who conducted his own investigation and opined that the Field House was negligent in the manner in which they handled Mr. Bowser. The Field House failed to have sufficient procedures on how to deal with this type of situation. The only written procedure that the bar had was to call a manager to deal with the problem. This procedure (the only written rule) was violated. The careless or perhaps reckless way in which Field House employees removed Mr. Bowser from the bar was the direct cause of Bowser's severe personal injuries.

Although the amount and conditions of the settlement of the case are strictly confidential, Mr. Bowser and Philadelphia area injury lawyer, Michael L. Man Killed in NJ Car Crash When His Car Was Crushed Between Two Trucks

A fatal New Jersey car crash claimed the life of a Marlton man when his vehicle was crushed between two trucks.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on the morning of April 18, 2011, 55-year-old Craig Powers was driving his Buick LaSabre on Route 73 at Remington Avenue in Pennsauken. As he was stopped at a light, his vehicle was rear-ended by a box truck and forced partially under the dump truck in front of him.

The collision, which occurred at a high rate of speed, forced the dump truck into two other vehicles.

Neither the truck drivers nor the occupants of the two other vehicles were injured; however, Powers sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

Route 73 was closed for several hours following the accident.

It is not yet known why the driver of the box truck did not stop, as this accident is still under investigation by the Pennsauken Police Department.

Postal Worker Seriously Injured in Philadelphia SEPTA Bus Crash

A Philadelphia postal worker very narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal injury caused by a SEPTA bus.

The terrifying pedestrian accident occurred just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of 48th and Woodcrest, in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia.

On April 15, postal worker Michelle Leaf, 56, crossed the intersection of 48th and Woodcrest while on her mail delivery route. As an oncoming bus turned the corner, she waved her hand to the driver, but the bus did not stop.

Witnesses stated that there was no way the bus driver couldn't have seen her in the roadway.

She was struck by the SEPTA bus and dragged a short distance but, miraculously, she was not fatally injured. She was taken to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania with fractured ribs and facial lacerations. She is listed in stable condition.

Her co-workers from the West Park Post Office stated that she is a very hard worker, and they are keeping her in their prayers.

This accident is still under investigation by both the Police Accident Investigation Division as well as SEPTA. No charges have been filed.

Pregnant Woman, Unborn Child Killed in Philadelphia Motorcycle Crash

On April 11, a pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a devastating motorcycle accident in the Rhawnhurst section of Philadelphia.

At about 9:30 p.m., Giselle Moya, 28, of Philadelphia, got off of a bus on the 7600 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. As she was crossing Roosevelt Boulevard, she was hit by a Kawasaki motorcycle driven by a 25-year-old man.

Moya, a mother of a 5-year-old boy, was also eight months pregnant. She was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center where both she and her unborn child were pronounced dead at 10:18 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle suffered a broken leg and head injuries. He was taken to the Frankford Torresdale Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Fatal New Jersey Car Crash Kills 9-Year-Old Hammonton Boy

A 9-year-old Hammonton boy was killed in a fatal Hamilton Township car wreck when the vehicle he was riding in was struck in the rear.

At approximately 1 p.m. on April 10, Ryan Schleyer was traveling in a Honda Accord with Max Guzman Sr., 35 and his 11-year-old son, also named Max Guzman. As Guzman was stopped in the southbound lane of Cologne Avenue, waiting to turn left to reach the athletic fields behind the firehouse, his vehicle was struck in the rear by a Ford Explorer driven by William Liepe, 58.

The impact forced his Honda into the northbound lane where it was then struck by a Cadillac Escalade, driven by Rosa Vazquez, 38.

Schleyer, a third-grader at Warren E. Sooy Jr. Elementary School, was restrained in the rear seat of the Honda. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple injuries were also sustained in this accident. Max Guzman Sr. was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City. Max Guzman Jr., who was restrained in the front seat of the Honda, was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for serious injuries.

Rosa Vazquez's daughter, Jalyssa Hitchens, 15, was riding in the front seat of the Escalade and complained of shoulder pain. Vazquez's 71-year-old mother, also named Rosa Vazquez, was riding in the rear of the vehicle and suffered cardiac issues.

This devastating New Jersey auto accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Rower Saves Teens After Their Car Plunges Into the Schuylkill River

What could have been a fatal Pennsylvania car crash into the Schuylkill River turned out much better than anyone could have imagined - especially for the occupants of the vehicle which plunged into the frigid water.

At about 9:15 a.m. on the morning of April 7, 2011, two teenagers were traveling eastbound on Boathouse Row in a Toyota Corolla when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car crossed over a grassy median and plunged into the cold water of the Schuylkill River. At the same time, Christopher DeFelice happened to be rowing along that river.

DeFelice, who competed on the U.S. Rowing Team in the 2004 World Championships, was heading back from his morning row when he saw the accident unfold. He rowed his single scull over to the sinking car and asked the driver if they were okay, at which point they told him that they couldn't swim.

As car quickly sunk below the water with the teens trapped inside, DeFelice was forced to abandon his rulebook knowledge and unstrap himself from his boat. Knowing that, in the frigid water, he could quickly be converted from rescuer to victim, he decided to take his chances. He was able to grab one man, but was quickly aware that he was not able to save both.

DeFelice yelled to the onlookers upon the shore for help and a brave bicyclist answered the call. He dove in and was able to pull the second man from the car and bring him to shore.

DeFelice was wet and cold, but did not receive medical attention.

The bicyclist left the scene without speaking to reporters and has not been identified.

The two young men were treated for hypothermia at Hahnemann Hospital and were in stable condition.

19-Year-Old Under the Influence Causes Fatal Pennsylvania Car Crash

A 19-year-old Philadelphia teen who caused a fatal Port Richmond car crash is expected to face criminal charges in connection with the wreck.

John Casey was found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he smashed his vehicle into a Ford Windstar minivan on the evening of March 29, killing one and injuring another.

Casey was driving his paraplegic friend's specially outfitted GMC van on Richmond Street near the intersection of E Schiller Street just before 11 p.m. when he rear ended the minivan, driven by 50-year-old Venustiano "Benny" Vidals, of Camden.

The impact of the crash caused the minivan to roll down the street and crash into a utility pole. Vidals, an immigrant from Puebla, Mexico, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He leaves behind his wife, Eda, a 14-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter.

Casey's paraplegic friend was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident. They were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Audubon Driver Turns Herself in After NJ Hit-and-Run

The driver of a Gloucester City hit-and-run accident which occurred on March 11, 2011 has turned herself in to police.

Early on the morning of March 13, Deborah Cirulli, 41, of Audubon, turned herself in at the Audubon Police Department, admitting to being the driver who struck a 21-year-old Clarksboro woman on Friday morning.

The accident occurred at about 1 a.m. on the first block of Broadway in Gloucester City. Angela Gattuso's Honda SUV broke down at a railroad track in the area of 549 South Broadway. She called her father, an auto-body repairman, who brought his tow truck to help her remove the vehicle. As they were loading the SUV onto the truck, Gattuso was struck by a Chevrolet Uplander, driven by Cirulli.

Cirulli initially drove the Uplander out of state and abandoned it in Maryland or Delaware; however, she then returned to the area to turn herself in due to the pressure of widespread media coverage of the incident.

Cirulli is charged with leaving the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash, aggravated assault with an auto, and hindering apprehension. She is being held in the Camden County Jail on $25,000 bail.

Gattuso remains in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

4 Teens Injured in PA Hit-and-Run, Driver Thought He Struck a Cone

Just after 10 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, a group of four teens left the Ridley High School production of the musical "Aida." As they were crossing the street at Morton Avenue and MacDade Boulevard, they were struck by a red Ford Windstar van, driven by 52-year-old Tyron Williams.

Williams was speeding through the intersection, in an attempt to beat a red light, when he struck the group of teens. He reportedly did not realize what had happened and thought that he hit a traffic cone.

Williams was pulled over in nearby Chester for erratic driving. He was swerving across the middle yellow lines and bumping the edge of the curb. He was driving without a license, as his license was suspended in May because of a medical condition.

He was charged with causing an accident involving injury or death, not being properly licensed in such an accident, recklessly driving with a suspended or revoked license, failure to stop at a red signal and recklessly endangering another person. He was jailed at the George Hill Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Three teenage girls and one boy, all either 14 or 15 years old, were hospitalized. Two of the teens were airlifted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, a third was airlifted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and the fourth was taken by ambulance to Taylor Hospital, in Ridley Park.

Two of the teens remain in Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania, one in intensive care, and the other under observation for a concussion.

Driver Trying to Pass Vehicle Causes Deadly Pennsylvania Car Crash

At around 11 p.m. on the night of March 3, 2011, a deadly Pennsylvania auto accident occurred when a vehicle unsuccessfully attempted to pass another and caused a head-on collision.

Accident investigators stated that a Jeep Cherokee driven by a 21-year-old driver, of Harleysville, was speeding west on Skippack Pikenear Landis Road in Worcester Township.

The driver of the Jeep approached another vehicle and attempted to pass, but he crashed head-on with a Nissan Sentra, driven by 23-year-old from Philadelphia.

The Jeep then struck a third vehicle, a Toyota Camry driven by 19-year-old from Lansdale.

This impact caused the Jeep to flip over and collide with a fourth vehicle, a Ford Explorer, driven by 19-year-old from Harleysville.

The driver from Philadelphia in the Nissan Sentra died at the accident scene of her injuries.

Others involved were all flown by PennStar to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center for treatment.

Some sustained major injuries, while one sustained minor injuries and one was uninjured in the crash.

Police blocked the road for nearly six hours while they investigated the accident scene. They have not yet released the cause of this fatal accident.

1 Dead, 11 Injured in Multivehicle New Jersey Car Crash

A multivehicle New Jersey car crash in Burlington County leaves one woman dead and 11 others injured.

At approximately 1 p.m. on February 22, a black Chevy Tahoe, headed south on Route 130, rear-ended a Mercedes Benz at Cooper Street. This impact forced the Mercedes into a bus stop, striking a 25-year-old woman, who was waiting in the bus shelter, before colliding with a light pole.

The impact of the crash also flipped the SUV onto its roof and caused it to strike another vehicle before coming to rest.

The driver of the SUV, Floyd M. Jones, 48, has been found to have been driving with a suspended license – something that is not unfamiliar to him, as he has been charged with driving with a suspended license seven times in the last 20 years. His license has been suspended 33 times, and he has been arrested 37 times, used 13 different aliases and seven Social Security numbers. He also has 11 warrants out for his arrest.

The negligence of Jones’ decision to drive caused harm to 11 people, including several children in his vehicle, one of whom is a 3-year-old, not properly restrained in a car seat.

Jones was charged with causing a death while driving with a suspended license, endangering the welfare of a child, and seven counts of causing serious bodily injury while driving with a suspended license.

Among the most seriously injured are the 25-year-old pedestrian, who was reported in serious condition, and a 13-year-old girl who was in the SUV, in critical condition.

Jones’ girlfriend, 57-year-old Joette Beatty of Willingboro, sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

9/11 Witness Tries to Rescue Man from Burning Car after NJ Car Crash

A New Jersey car crash on Route 29 leaves one man fatally injured despite the efforts of several passersby who desperately tried to free him from his burning vehicle.

At approximately 2:45 p.m. on February 22, 43-year-old Barry Gray, of Bordentown, lost control of his 1996 Dodge Avenger under the railroad bridge at Lower Ferry and River roads in Ewing.

No one witnessed the actual crash nor did any passersby investigate the burning vehicle on the side of the road until rental property manager Brent Zajac stopped.

As he tried to get through to 9-1-1, vehicles kept passing the burning vehicle with Gray trapped inside. After wrongly being transferred to Bucks County police, he finally got the request for help to Ewing fire and police; however, by the time they arrived it was too late.

While waiting for help from the police and fire departments, other vehicles pulled over to assist. Zajac was joined by retired disabled beer truck driver Mark Zegarski, gas truck driver Janos Barna, off-duty Trenton Police Officer Doug Moreland, and New Jersey State Trooper Chris Vozzo from the State Police training academy at Sea Girt.

The five men went into the heavy smoke and desperately tried to free Gray from the fully flamed-engulfed vehicle, but it was not possible. The door was stuck shut and his crushed legs were trapped in the wreckage.

This horrific accident ranks amongst the worst moments of Zajac’s life, as he was also a witness of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. At that time, he lived in a 65-story apartment across from the World Trade Center. He witnessed the second place crash into the building and saw people jump to their deaths after the crash.

Kyleigh's Law still good law in NJ? | NJ teen accident information

An attempt to have Kyleigh's Law overturned is denied!

A New Jersey attorney filed a lawsuit in 2010 challenging the constitutionality of Kyleigh's Law, a law which is part of NJ's graduated driver license (GDL) program. The attorney argues that the law, with its mandatory red decal placement on the license plates of young drivers' vehicles, impedes the privacy rights of young drivers, which are otherwise protected by the federal driver's privacy protection act. He further contends that the decals expose the drivers as young persons, which is not only a breach of their privacy but also leaves them vulnerable to predators of all sorts.

Last year, the law was ruled as constitutional by a New Jersey Superior Court Judge, and the case was dismissed. The attorney appealed the decision, but this February the law was once again upheld. Both courts held that:

The privacy issue brought on by the red decals is unfounded because young drivers, by virtue of being out in public, reveal themselves as young; and
The law reasonably enforces the intended safety measures.

Man Tried to Flee After PA Hit-and-Run, Pulled Off Flight at JFK

An Irish citizen who was trying to flee the country after his involvement in a Pennsylvania hit-and-run crash and was pulled off a flight at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York.

On February 9, 2011, 28-year-old Damian Crossan was attempting to flee the country after striking a pedestrian in Upper Darby and leaving the scene.

The victim, 32-year-old Jamie Timlin, was struck from behind at 11:18 p.m. on February 2 while walking on Cedar Lane near Beverly Boulevard. She was pulling a red shopping cart and walking in the street because of the snow.

Police received an anonymous tip that Crossan was responsible for the accident and caught up to him as he was attempting to flee to Ireland. He was apprehended by police and escorted off the plane at the time of departure.

Once in custody, Crossan admitted to striking a pedestrian with his vehicle. Police found his pick-up truck in the long-term parking at JFK and noted considerable damage to its body, including a cracked front bumper, cracked turning signal light and red-paint transfer.

Crossan is an unlicensed driver and has a prior DUI conviction. He is facing charges of careless driving, accidents involving personal injury, accidents while improperly licensed, hit-and-run, immediate notice to police and reckless driving.

Timlin remains in critical condition in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with injuries to her head, brain and hips.

Naked Driver Strikes Pedestrian in Philadelphia Car Crash

A bizarre Center City car crash occurred on February 9, when a woman hit a pedestrian with her vehicle.

What’s the bizarre part of the story?

The driver wasn’t wearing any clothes.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, a woman driving a black Toyota Corolla attempted to make a U-turn at 17th and JFK Boulevard. As she was making the turn in the busy street, she struck a pedestrian.

Officers nearby saw the accident and approached the scene. When they came up to the vehicle, they were surprised by something they weren’t expecting – a naked driver.

The driver resisted officers who were eventually forced to pull her from the vehicle and cover her with what appeared to be a sheet.

The condition of the pedestrian is not known at this time.

When driving, always remember to only make legal U-turns and look for other vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians before turning. And, also, please remember to dress before your drive.

Driver Flees After Fatal Pennsylvania Truck Crash with Motorcycle

A trucker has been charged with the death of a Sellersville motorcyclist after fleeing a Pennsylvania truck accident scene and leaving the motorist fatally injured in the roadway.

On the morning of February 3, Ernest Demetrius Cohens, 42, of Bronx, New York, realized he had missed a delivery address and attempted to make a U-turn on Route 309 in Hatfield Township from the right-hand southbound lane. As he was making the turn, he was struck by motorcyclist Terry Kriebel, 55, who was traveling in the left-hand southbound lane.

Cohens got out of his truck and realized Kriebel had been fatally injured. He assisted another motorist in covering Kriebel’s body with a sheet or towel, then got back into his truck and fled the scene.

Cohens was apprehended in Bucks County approximately 40 minutes after the Pennsylvania motorcycle accident. He told the Hillstown officer that he had been in an accident and left the scene because he was scared.

Police have determined that Cohens' license was suspended at the time of the crash.

Cohens faces charges of causing an accident involving death, causing an accident involving death while not properly licensed, and driving without a valid commercial driver’s license. Leaving the scene of a crash in which someone has died carries a mandatory one-year prison sentence.

Cohans’ bail is set at $250,000, and his hearing is set for Tuesday, February 8.

Trucker Falsifies Logs, Causes Fatal Philadelphia Semi-Truck Crash

A trucker responsible for a fatal Pennsylvania truck crash in Lower Merion Township on January 23, 2009, was indicted on Thursday, February 3, on charges of falsifying his driver’s log.

The driver, 57-year-old Valerijs N. Belovs of the 7900 block of Algon Avenue, was found to have made 15 false entries in his driver’s log during a trip through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Investigators found two sets of driving logs - one which contained Belovs’ actual driving hours and another which contained falsified hours. The false log had numerous entries stating that he was resting when, in all actuality, he was operating his tractor-trailer and not observing the rest periods required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Belovs also stated that he was aware that his tractor-trailer had not been inspected, despite a current inspection sticker on the vehicle. He was also aware that the brakes were failing, which led to the fatal Pennsylvania truck crash that killed David Schreffler, a 49-year-old businessman and father of three from Fort Washington.

Belovs pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide in Montgomery County Court in 2009 and served prison time last year for the death of Schreffler. If convicted for falsifying his driver’s logs, Belovs could face additional jail time as well as a fine of $3.75 million.

Police Investigate Deadly Feltonville, Philadelphia Car Crash

In the early morning of January 23, 2011 a Philadelphia car wreck occurred in the Feltonville neighborhood, killing one and leaving one injured.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., police were called to the scene of a Philadelphia auto accident at the corner of F Street and Roosevelt Boulevard. When they arrived they discovered an SUV containing two victims.

The driver of the SUV, 19-year-old Juan Carlos Perdoma, from the 3900 block of Claridge Street, lost control while traveling north on Roosevelt Boulevard. He lost control of the vehicle and drove through the parking lot of an A PLUS Mini Mart and gas station and struck a utility pole before finally plowing into a chain link fence and coming to rest.

Both Perdoma and his female passenger were transported to Temple University Hospital. Perdoma was pronounced dead, and the female passenger sustained serious injuries but was listed in stable condition.

It is not yet known what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

A Philadelphia car crash which occurred on Friday, January 14, 2011 leaves one man fatally injured because of another man’s road rage.

The traffic accident, which occurred in the 3000 block of Devereaux Street, was a simple fender bender; however, Donald Griffith, 42, was overcame with rage and pulled a gun on the other driver, 20-year-old Jamil Ransome.

Griffith fired the gun repeatedly at Ransome, hitting him once in the stomach.

Griffith fled the scene before officers arrived, but was soon apprehended.

Ransome was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Stray bullets also struck another vehicle which was not involved in the accident. The person in that vehicle was not injured.

Woman Falls Asleep at Wheel, Causes Upper Pittsgrove Twp Power Outages

On Tuesday January 11, 2011 a Bridgeton woman fell asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle, causing a Pennsylvania car crash which left many without power.

At approximately 6:21 a.m., Araseli Velasquez, 22, was traveling northbound on Route 77 when she fell asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle and drifted into the southbound lane of the road.

Her car went off of the road and into an embankment where it struck a support beam utility pole, which was connected to another pole in the northbound lane.

The impact of the Upper Pittsgrove auto accident caused both poles to fall and roughly 290 families throughout the township to experience immediate power outages.

Power was restored to the households by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Velasquez complained of knee pain but refused medical treatment at the scene. She was charged with careless driving, failure to maintain a lane, driving without a license, and driving without insurance.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.

Police Chase Ends When Vehicle Crashes Into Camden Police Station

On Monday, January 3, 2011, police were surprised when their chase ended up at a familiar location – the Camden police station.

At approximately 1 p.m., police began chasing a maroon minivan near the 8th Street exit of Admiral Wilson Boulevard.

The driver of the stolen van, Alex Butts, 37, of Trenton, failed to stop and led police on a chase through Camden.

As Butts flew through the intersection of Haddon Avenue and Federal Street, he clipped the front of a lunch truck, driven by Anthony , owner of Anthony’s Mobile Catering.

The force of the impact sent the van off course and right up the steps of the embankment outside of the Camden police station.

Butts was taken into custody. Information about his condition was not available.

Anthony was uninjured in the Camden, New Jersey auto accident.

Teen Steals Car, Leads Police on Chase Ending in Bucks County Crash

On Wednesday, December 29, a teen decided to take his neighbor’s idling car out for a joyride. The thoughtless decision led to a police chase that ended in a Bucks County car crash.

At approximately 6:42 a.m., a Ridley Township man reported that his blue, two door Pontiac G6, which he had left warming up in his driveway, had been stolen. At about 7 a.m., police spotted the car, being driven by Paul McCurry Jr., 19, of Ridley Park, on I-95.

Ridley cops bumped the rear of the vehicle in order to force McCurry to swerve and crash into a guardrail on an overpass above Newportville Road near the Neshaminy Creek.

When the vehicle crashed, McCurry fled the scene, running through a wooded area, an apartment complex and an industrial park.

The officers were still searching for McCurry when, nearly an hour after the crash, he nonchalantly strolled by a news van, which was photographing the scene, while talking on his cell phone. Officers spotted him and chased him on foot before taking him into custody.

McCurry was charged with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment, fleeing or attempting to elude police and resisting arrest.

No one was injured in the accident or pursuit.

Motorist Hits House Then Flees, Leaving Fiancée and Children Behind

The night of Sunday, December 26th was quite eventful for Lori and Carlos Arias when a vehicle crashed into their family room. To add to the bizarreness of the night, the driver then fled, leaving his fiancée and two children behind on the Arias’ couch.

As Lori Arias was shutting down her computer at nearly midnight, she heard a loud crash. Thinking that a shelf had fallen in the kitchen pantry, she and her husband Carlos got up and started heading that way. But as they entered the family room, they discovered that a vehicle had crashed through their wall.

The driver of the white Toyota, Daniel Damon, 36, of Camden, got out of the car and removed his newborn baby, who was in an infant carrier, from the vehicle and placed him on the Arias’ couch. His fiancée, Camille Walker, 28, of Woodbury and their 13-month-old child exited the vehicle and sat on the couch as well.

When Carlos Arias stated that he was going to call the police to report the Deptford car crash, Damon become startled and fled the scene. Walker was apparently shocked, asking why he had left her and the children there.

Damon was arrested shortly after the accident in the 1100 block of Cooper Street, not far from the township police station. He faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and leaving an accident scene.

When Walker was questioned by the authorities, she stated that someone else was driving the vehicle. She was arrested on obstruction of the administration of the law.

Both of the young children are with a relative.

Carlos and Lori Arias, along with their four children, were forced to seek temporary shelter due to the extent of damages to their home.

Thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries in this bizarre New Jersey car crash.

Lumberton Man Fatally Injured in Hopewell Township Truck Crash on I-95

A New Jersey auto accident on I-95 claimed the life of a Lumberton man.

On the morning of December 20, Phelan Smith, 36, was traveling at an unusually slow rate of speed in the center lane of I-95.

A motorist called the police to notify them of the slow driver, but they could not make it to the scene in time. Moments after they were notified of the slow driver, a second call came in to report a devastating New Jersey tractor trailer accident.

An oncoming tractor trailer driver was not able to stop when he approached Smith’s car at interstate speeds and slammed into the rear of the vehicle.

Smith was unconscious when paramedics arrived and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3:15 p.m.

The driver of the truck, 44-year-old Jose Delcidn, of North Bergen, was uninjured.

Police are unable to accurately determine the exact speed at which Smith was traveling; however, they stated that his slow speed was the single largest contributing factor to the accident.

Delcidn did not receive a citation for the incident.

Man Struck in Kensington Pedestrian Car Crash Dies

Police are on the search for the driver of a vehicle who struck and later killed a man in a Philadelphia pedestrian accident on Monday night.

At approximately 8 p.m. on the evening of December 13, Efrain Martinez, 48, was crossing Kensington Avenue at Monmouth Street when he was hit by a white Ford F-150 pickup truck. The driver of the vehicle stopped to ask Martinez if he would like to go to the hospital, but he declined.

Martinez, who was walking with his brother, was able to walk away from the incident; however, he started experiencing chest pains and trouble breathing later that evening. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died at approximately 10:05 p.m.

The driver of the truck is described to be a Hispanic man in his 40’s with a light complexion, round face, full beard and short hair. His passenger is described to be a Hispanic female in her 40’s with a light complexion and black hair. Both the driver and passenger were wearing black puffy jackets.

Police are urging anyone who has information relating to the incident or the identification of the driver to please call Accident Investigations at 215-685-3180.

Police Pursuit Ends in Deadly Philadelphia Car Crash

A police chase on the morning of December 19, 2010 ended tragically with two dead and one critically injured.

Just moments after officers called off the chase, a catastrophic Philadelphia auto accident occurred on the 3500 block of Schoolhouse Lane when the 2001 Buick flipped over and caught fire.

One man died when he was thrown from the vehicle, and another 25-year-old male was found dead in the back seat of the car. A third occupant of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man, was listed in critical condition.

It is not known why the officers were pursuing the vehicle; however, we do know that the vehicle had fled from 35th district officers in Logan. They are suspected on gun violations as they threw a gun from the vehicle which was later recovered.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Icy Ewing Car Crash Injures Two Pedestrians

An early morning Ewing auto accident occurred on December 2, 2010, when a vehicle hit a patch of ice and lost control, striking two pedestrians.

At approximately 6:20 a.m. on Thursday morning, 82-year-old Felix Soto was driving his truck northbound on Pennington Road when he hit a patch of ice, sending his truck over the curb and into the exterior of Jane David’s Salon near the corner of Pennington Road and Woodland Avenue.

He got out of the truck to examine the damage. A passerby, 65-year-old Patricia Copeland came over to Soto’s vehicle to see if she could be of any assistance.

As they were examining the damage, a car driven by 26-year-old Jacqueline Strouse hit the same patch of ice, traveled over the same curb, and struck both Soto and Copeland.

Soto was thrown onto the lawn of the salon and Copeland was trapped beneath the vehicle.

Copeland remained conscious during the 20 minutes it took for rescuers to lift the vehicle from her left arm and left side using bars and wooden planks.

She was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where she was, amazingly, only treated for a broken leg.

Soto and Strouse were also transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but did not sustain any serious injuries.

Rollover Philadelphia Car Crash Injures Police Officers

On the afternoon of December 3, 2010 a police car was involved in a Philadelphia car crash, injuring two officers as well as the driver of the civilian vehicle.

On Friday, at approximately 1:15 p.m., a Philadelphia auto accident occurred between a police car and a civilian vehicle at the intersection of Godfrey and Ogontz Avenues in North Philadelphia.

The officers were responding to a dispatch call at the time of the accident.

The airbags in the police cruiser deployed and the civilian vehicle was flipped onto its side.

Both of the officers as well as the civilian driver were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where they were all listed to be in stable condition.

On the early morning of November 25, a motorist driving the wrong way on I-95 caused a head-on Philadelphia car wreck, killing 2 and injuring 3.

At nearly 2:30 a.m., state police received several reports of a vehicle that was driving the wrong direction on I-95. A short time after, a Pennsylvania auto accident occurred when the wrong way driver hit another car head-on.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene near the Broad Street ramp for the interstate in South Philadelphia just before 2:30 a.m.

Both drivers of the vehicles were killed in the accident.

31-year-old Shelton Mack, of Philadelphia, was driving alone in one vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle was identified as Michael K. Ingram, 23, of Newark, Delaware. Three passengers were also in Ingram’s vehicle. They were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital following the collision.

This accident is still under investigation. It is unclear which vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the interstate, as well as whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Car Crashes on Schuylkill Expressway in Pennsylvania

On the morning of November 15, a Pennsylvania auto accident involving a deer and an SUV left two people injured.

At approximately 11:22 a.m., 31-year-old Winston Bryant of Philadelphia was driving eastbound along the Schuylkill Expressway in Pennsylvania. As he was nearing the Belmont Avenue exit, a deer entered the interstate’s westbound lanes and jumped the concrete barrier into the path of Bryant’s SUV.

The SUV struck the deer when it was in mid-air, sending the deer through the windshield of the vehicle. The SUV then spun around before coming to a rest and facing oncoming traffic.

Bryant was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) with minor injuries. However, passenger Alisha Tucker, 30, of Pottstown, was taken to HUP in critical condition. The details of her injuries were not immediately released.

Both Bryant and Tucker were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

While traveling northbound on I-95, a man shot a video of a woman driving a blue older model Buick station wagon the wrong direction on I-95 south. He tried to motion to her to stop, but she simply waved him off.

Other vehicles on the roadway were seen swerving to avoid her, causing multiple other crashes on the interstate. She was also seen sideswiping the center barrier.

After traveling some distance, the woman eventually exited I-95.

Pennsylvania State Police finally located the 84-year-old Wilmington, Delaware woman at her home.

It is unclear whether she knew she was traveling the wrong direction on the freeway. The incident is still under investigation.

Luckily, no serious injuries were sustained in the Pennsylvania auto accidents.

Car Found Stuck in Tree after Mysterious Philadelphia Car Crash

In the early morning of October 28, 2010, a teenage girl was found walking alone in the darkness along the Schuylkill Expressway. She was disoriented and bloody and told investigators that she believed she had been abducted. It wasn’t until hours later that the young girl remembered the horrific incident that lead up to her long walk in the darkness.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was picked up at approximately 12:20 a.m. and was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She did not have any recollection of what had happened to her and why she was covered with blood, cuts and bruises.

Nearly 12 hours later, at around 1 p.m., the teen remembered that she and her mother were in a Philadelphia auto accident the night before.

Police investigated and discovered a black 1997 Infiniti entangled in the branches of a tree near Roosevelt Boulevard and Schuylkill Expressway. The body of the teen’s mother, 34-year-old Lateisha Johnson, was still inside.

Police believe that around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, Johnson lost control of the vehicle, crashed through the guardrail, hit an embankment, vaulted 30 feet, struck a mound of rock and flipped, becoming entangled in the branches of a tree which was 40 feet above the ground and out of sight from passing traffic. They believe that Johnson was killed on impact and that her daughter was thrown from the car through an open window.

The accident investigation tied up traffic on Roosevelt Boulevard and the Schuylkill Expressway for hours during the evening rush hour.

Police are unsure of the exact cause of the accident, but site excessive speed as a contributing factor.

The daughter also told police that her mother suffered from epilepsy and may have suffered an epileptic seizure in the moments before the accident.

Blind Man, Seeing Eye Dog Killed in Moorestown Pedestrian Accident

A fatal Moorestown pedestrian accident occurred on October 6, 2010 when a blind man and his seeing eye dog were both struck in the middle of the block on Camden Avenue.

On Tuesday morning, Gordon Parks, 68, and his seeing eye dog, Wendy, were crossing Camden Avenue, not far from Lenola Road. Instead of crossing at a crosswalk, Parks and Wendy entered Camden Avenue in the middle of the roadway.

Both Parks, who was wearing an orange reflective vest, and his chocolate lab were struck by a 2005 Dodge pickup.

The impact of the New Jersey car crash killed Wendy and threw Parks into the westbound lane.

Parks was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he died of his injuries on October 8.

The driver of the Dodge, Wayne T. Morris, 72, of Tabernacle, was not injured. No charges have been filed against him for the accident.

Lower Salford, Pennsylvania Car Crash Injures Three

On the afternoon of October 18, 2010, a three-vehicle Pennsylvania car crash occurred on Harleysville Pike in Lower Salford, just south of Yoder Road.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon, a white BMW SUV, gray Honda Accord, and a white sewage disposal fuel truck collided on Harleysville Pike.

The accident occurred near the entrance to the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, which is located at 140 Harleysville Pike.

According to Lower Salford Police, the Honda was heading southbound on Harleysville Pike,while the BMW and fuel truck were both heading northbound.

All of the vehicles collided and sustained front end damage.

The exact cause and details of the accident are still under investigation.

At the time of the accident, the BMW contained the driver and two passengers, one of which was an infant. Both the driver and infant were injured and transported by medical helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.

The driver of the Honda was also injured and was flown to Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Ewing, New Jersey Auto Accident with Shuttle Bus Kills One

On October 16, 2010, a Ewing car crash on Route 31 claimed the life of a township man.

At approximately 12:40 p.m., Kenneth Herbst, 64, a resident of Aquetong Lane, tried to turn left from Rockleigh Drive into the southbound lanes of Pennington Road.

A shuttle bus, which was traveling along Route 31, struck the front fender of Herbst’s vehicle, spinning it 360 degrees before coming to rest.

The shuttle bus, which was only occupied by the driver, flipped onto its side.

Herbst was pronounced dead at the scene due to head and facial trauma. It is unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Emergency crews from the West Trenton Fire Department and Prospect Heights Fire Department had to cut the bus driver from the vehicle. She was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. The exact extent of her injuries is not known, but are not said to be life-threatening.

The exact details of the crash are still being investigated; however, the driver of the bus is not believed to be at fault for the Ewing car accident.

Man Dies in Pennsylvania Car Crash in Susquehanna Township

On Thursday, October 7, 2010 a man from Harrisburg was involved in a fatal Pennsylvania car crash. The accident took place in Susquehanna Township around 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of Walnut and Fox Streets.

Walter Doswell, of Harrisburg, was driving a 2000 Lincoln Sedan heading North on Fox Street when the incident took place. The other driver, Edith Grier, also of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2007 GMC sport utility vehicle heading east on Walnut. Neither passenger’s age was given at the scene.

Doswell was transported to Penn State Milton South Hershey Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Grier was taken to Community General Hospital for evaluation and was later released.

The details of the accident have not yet been confirmed; however, the accident is being investigated by the Dauphin County Reconstruction Team and Susquehanna Township police. Anyone who witnessed the car accident is asked to contact the Susquehanna Township police at (717) 652-8265.

Man Shot and then Involved in Pennsylvania Car Crash

During the night of Saturday, October 16, 2010 a man was involved in a shooting and then a Pennsylvania car crash.

According to the police the 27-year-old man was shot twice near the intersection of 63rd and Callowhill streets. The shooting was said to have taken place around 2:00 a.m.

The man sustained one gunshot wound to his leg and another wound to his back.

Luckily, he was not alone during the incident. A nearby friend volunteered to take him to the hospital for care.

On the way to Misericordia Hospital, the shooting victim’s friend, who was driving a Nissan, crashed into a Buick at the intersection of 62nd and Chestnut streets. The impact caused the Nissan to lose control and smash into a local Chinese market on the corner of the intersection.

The impact of the crash also caused the Buick to spin and smash into a nearby parked car.

The shooting victim was transported to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and was placed in critical condition. The condition of his friend is unknown.

The 30-year-old driver of the Buick also sustained injuries and was taken by ambulance to Jefferson University Hospital where he was placed in stable condition.

The cause of the shooting is still under investigation. No arrests have been made as of this time.

Three People Hurt in Upper Hanover, Pennsylvania Car Crash

On Monday, October 4, 2010 three people were injured in an Upper Hanover car accident near Geryville Pike.

A 63-year-old man was driving his 2004 Ford Econoline E250 west on Route 663 when he attempted to stop at a red light at the intersection approaching Geryville Pike. Due to the wet road conditions, he was unable to stop his vehicle.

At the same time, a 67-year-old Perkiomenville woman was driving north on Geryville Pike. She proceeded through the intersection on a green light but did not notice the Ford truck sliding toward her. Her 1999 Chevrolet Blazer was struck in the passenger side by the truck and was pushed into a PPL utility pole at the northwest corner of the intersection.

The Perkiomenville woman, the driver of the Ford truck, and a 30-year-old male passenger in the truck were all injured in the accident. All the victims were transported by EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital.

There is no further information as to the injuries that were sustained; however, all occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Distracted Driving Summit Convenes

On Tuesday September 21, 2010 the U.S. Department of Transportation convened a summit to discuss the problem of distracted driving. Pennsylvania does not currently have a state anti-distracted driving law. However, thirty other states and the District of Columbia do have anti-distracted driving laws.

Laws May be Part of the Solution

Several tools to combat the dangers of distracted driving were suggested on the first day of the summit by the Obama administration officials who attended the summit. They indicated that tough laws and enforcement of those laws will be necessary to effectively prevent accident injuries and fatalities caused by distracted driving. Additionally, officials suggested other measures such as putting warning messages on cell phones that remind people not to use cell phones while driving. Safety advocates also proposed campaigns similar to the effective anti-drunk driving campaigns that started in the 1980s and helped to reduce distracted driving deaths.

Already Successful Measures Were Highlighted During the Summit

Summit leaders cited successful examples of companies that have banned texting and driving including the federal ban on government employees not allowed to text and drive. In addition, the superior police enforcement of existing laws in Hartford, CT and Syracuse, NY have proven to be successful.

Last year, approximately 5,500 people died in distracted driving accidents in the United States.

Driver and Dog Killed in Pennsylvania Crash

On Tuesday morning September 21, 2010 a man died in a Schuylkill County car crash. The accident happened when a box truck crossed the center line on Route 209 in Walker Township and crashed head-on into a car. The driver of the passenger car died in the accident. The driver of the truck suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by Tamaqua Ambulance to an area hospital. Neither driver has yet been identified to the media.

While there were no other human passengers in the car that was hit, there were three poodles traveling in the car. One of the poodles died from injuries sustained in this Pennsylvania car truck accident. The poodle puppies received oxygen from firefighters who responded to the accident call. The two that survived were taken by Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue to Companion Animal Hospital in Tamaqua.

First responders to this accident included the Tamaqua Fire Department, the New England Fire Company, the Tuscarora Fire Company and the Tamaqua Rescue Squad. Pennsylvania State Police at the Frackville Station are investigating this fatal Schuylkill County crash.

Chester County Crash Kills Two Teens and Injures Others

On Friday September 10, 2010 a fatal head-on collision occurred in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The accident happened just after 10 p.m. on State Road in London Grove Township.

Police report that a car tried to pass several other cars near a curve on State Road and hit an oncoming vehicle. The passing car was full of teenagers leaving a high school football game. Two teenagers in the car were killed. The teens have been identified as 18-year-old Arick T. Price of Pine Grove, who was the driver of the passing vehicle, and Arick's passenger, 15-year-old Victoria Ramos of Avon Grove. Two other passengers in the car were injured and taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment. They have been identified as 21-year-old Brittany Miller, the owner of the passing vehicle, and 16-year-old Carey Ciccone.

Four people in the Yukon that was involved in the crash were also injured.

In response to this tragic Chester County car crash, Pennsylvania lawmakers are said to be considering tougher teenage driving laws aimed at preventing accidents like this from taking more young lives in the future.

How Did Pennsylvania and New Jersey Cities Rank in the 6th Annual Alls

Earlier this month, Allstate Insurance Company released its 2010 "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report." The report, which is issued annually, ranks 200 of America's largest cities by the frequency with which cars are involved in accidents.

Of The 200 Ranked Cities For Auto Safety, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ranked 187.

According to Allstate, Philadelphia had one of the highest rates of car accidents among the studied cities. In fact, Philadelphia drivers are 53.5 times more likely to be in a collision than the average national driver. Philadelphia drivers are in accidents, on average, every 6.5 years.

Several New Jersey cities didn't rank much better than Philadelphia. Four New Jersey cities were in the bottom 10% of those considered in the Allstate Study. Specifically, Paterson, NJ ranked 178, Elizabeth, NJ ranked 184, Jersey City ranked 186, and Newark, NJ ranked 190.

There were no Pennsylvania or New Jersey cities ranked in the top 10 safest driving cities according to this study.

What These Numbers Mean

These numbers indicate that in some cities of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, car crashes happen with greater frequency than they do in other states and that Pennsylvania and New Jersey drivers should be aware of common reasons for car accidents and drive carefully to avoid injuring themselves or others.

How Deadly Were New Jersey Roads Over Labor Day Weekend 2010?

With the last holiday weekend of the summer behind us, it is time to reflect on how well the weekend went from a traffic safety perspective. New Jersey state police reported five fatalities on New Jersey roads over the 2010 Labor Day Weekend.

Three people died in car crashes, one person died in a motorcycle crash, and one person died in a New Jersey bicycle accident. The bicyclist was hit by a car in Egg Harbor Township. He has been identified as 16-year-old Jacob Broschard. The driver who hit him, William Michael Simkins, has been charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

The number of fatalities over Labor Day Weekend 2010 is the same as the number of lives lost in New Jersey accidents over Labor Day Weekend 2009.

Overall, New Jersey traffic fatalities have shown a decrease of approximately 12% in the first eight months of 2010 as compared to the first eight months of 2009. Yet, 367 people died in New Jersey accidents between New Year’s weekend and Labor Day weekend this year.
