Personal injury cases, including auto accident cases, oftentimes involve an investment of substantial time for a Pennsylvania personal injury lawyer.  Traditionally, lawyers in general either charge by an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a contingent fee.  Contingent fees are usually preferred by victims of personal injuries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  With a contingent legal fee, the injured victim does not have to pay legal fees until and unless there is a recovery on the case, whether it be by settlement or a jury verdict.  Contingent fees help people who would not otherwise be able to afford tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.  In PA, personal injury lawyers charge on average anywhere from 33% to 45% or more of the case recovery for their legal fees.
